  • Allan's A‐list

    Open Access•Murray Pittock•ARTICLE•Journal for Eighteenth-Century…•2025

The new and first complete edition of the works of Allan Ramsay (1684–1758) in six volumes is beginning to draw renewed attention towards this important poet. This essay examines one of the key unexamined puzzles of his career: how an Edinburgh wigmaker apparently without any advantage of birth and connexions succeeded in gathering an enormously distinguished subscription list — including nearly sixty peers and eight dukes — for his first key col…

This encyclopedia documents the presence and impact of nationalized cultural consciousness in European nationalism. Edited by Joep Le…

  • Scottish sovereignty and the union of 1707

    Murray Pittock•ARTICLE•National Identities•2012•Cited by: 4

This article discusses the history of Scottish sovereignty as a component of Scottish identity. The argument is that certain aspects of Scottish sovereignty were preserved by the union, and that these have often remained latent until the devolution settlement. The new political landscape in the UK has contributed to a redevelopment of ideas of British parliamentary sovereignty, which have served to render these elements of preserved Scottish sove…

This paper seeks to place the well-known lineaments of Law’s System in France within the context not only of his earlier writings on the Scottish economy but also in the dimension of his lived experience as a 17th-century Scot, the son of a goldsmith-banker, and a man acutely conscious both of the history of his country’s unstable monetary policy, and also of the final crisis into which it was lurching in his own day
