An Explainable Machine Learning Approach to Predict Suicidal Thoughts in University Students
The increasing prevalence of suicidal ideation among university students, especially those enrolled in medical and healthcare courses, necessitates innovative approaches for early detection and prevention. The southern part of Italy presents a distinct cultural, social, and economic context and is under‐represented in research. This study leverages the capabilities of machine learning methods and explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) to addre…
Can gender-affirming hormone therapy be associated with enhanced psychological functioning in trans individuals? A Rorschach test study
Transgender is an umbrella term that refers to individuals whose gender identity does not align with their birth-assigned sex. Comprehensive psychological assessment is essential to evaluate psychological functioning in this population, such as stress control, cognition, affect, self-perception, and interpersonal perception. However, there is a lack of consensus on the most appropriate assessment procedures. Moreover, commonly used self-report me…
Associations between local rates of violence and experiences of psychosis in Trinidad
Introduction and aim Individual-level exposure to violence is known to influence various aspects of the experience of psychosis. This study aimed to assess the impact of local violence rates on the symptom profiles and outcomes of people with psychosis, their exposure to trauma and other potential risk and protective factors, and interactions with the police and mental health services, in a Caribbean country with high rates of violent crime. Meth…
Migrant integration policies, regional social disadvantage, ethnicity and psychosis risk
Compared with individual-level factors, macro-level exposures have received less attention in research on the increased risk of psychosis among ethnic minorities. We aimed to investigate the impact of migrant integration policies and area-level social deprivation on higher incidence rates among ethnic minorities. This study, conducted between 2010 and 2015, analysed incidence data from five countries from the EUropean network of national schizoph…
Mapping genomic loci implicates genes and synaptic biology in schizophrenia
Psychiatry Trainees' Attitudes, Knowledge, and Training in Addiction Psychiatry—A European Survey
Background: Although psychoactive substance use disorders (PSUDs) are a domain of mental health, addiction psychiatry is only formally recognized as a subspecialty in a few European countries, and there is no standardized training curriculum. Methods: A 76-item questionnaire was developed and disseminated through an online anonymous data-collecting system and hand-to-hand amongst psychiatric trainees from the 47 European countries of the Council …
Duration of Untreated Disorder and Cannabis Use
According to our study, cannabis use can be a predictor of FEP and DUP, and of disease outcome. However, several factors might influence the relationship between cannabis use and DUP. Preventing cannabis use and early diagnosis of psychotic disorders might impact the disease by reducing the persistence of symptoms and limiting dissociative experiences
The contribution of cannabis use to variation in the incidence of psychotic disorder across Europe (EU-GEI)
BACKGROUND: Cannabis use is associated with increased risk of later psychotic disorder but whether it affects incidence of the disorder remains unclear. We aimed to identify patterns of cannabis use with the strongest effect on odds of psychotic disorder across Europe and explore whether differences in such patterns contribute to variations in the incidence rates of psychotic disorder. METHODS: -tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in the different types o…
