Open Access•Megan Ung, Sarah Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

The HIV epidemic in Australia is changing with higher risk for HIV among newly-arrived Asian-born men who have sex with men (MSM) compared to Australian-born MSM. We evaluated the preferences for HIV prevention strategies among 286 Asian-born MSM living in Australia for <5 years. A latent class analysis uncovered three classes of respondents who were defined by their preferences: “PrEP” (52%), “Consistent condoms” (31%), and “No strategy” (17%). …

  • Supernatural beliefs, religious affiliations, and HIV testing among recently arrived Asian-born men who have sex with men in Australia

    Stephen W Pan, Christopher K Fairley et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2023

HIV testing rates among recently arrived (≤5 years) Asian-born men who have sex with men (MSM) in Australia remain suboptimal. Research indicates that belief in supernatural determinants of health (supernatural beliefs) may be an important barrier to greater HIV test uptake. We examined potential associations between supernatural beliefs and HIV testing among recently arrived Asian-born MSM in Australia. In 2019, an online survey was completed by…

  • Supernatural explanatory models of health and illness and healthcare use in China among men who have sex with men

    Open Access•Stephen W Pan, Richard M Carpiano et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2019

People's beliefs in supernatural explanatory models of health and illness - beliefs in divine and/or supernatural forces to inform how they perceive, interpret, and respond to health and illness - may have important implications for their use of healthcare services, especially among individuals with lower socioeconomic status (SES). However, the relevance of such research for contexts with strong Confucian and Buddhist traditions and sexual minor…

  • Driving force of condomless sex after online intervention among Chinese men who have sex with men

Open Access•Wenting Huang, Dan Wu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

The intervention appeared to be effective among MSM who reported viewing additional condom promotion videos by themselves and more community engagement after the intervention. In MSM who reported risky sexual behaviors at baseline, the intervention appeared less effective. Tailored intervention videos that target particular subgroups, active in-person community engagement, and optimized intervention frequency should be considered in future sexual…

    Stephen W Pan, Richard M Carpiano et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2018

Ethnic affiliation can define sociocultural boundaries and contribute to the HIV vulnerabilities faced by men who have sex with men (MSM). This study investigated the influence of ethnic affiliation on HIV vulnerabilities among MSM in North China. Our study analyzed a cross-sectional survey of MSM (n = 398) in two major North China cities. We examined associations between ethnic affiliation and (a) HIV status, (b) sexual behaviors and experiences…

  • Can HIV service data be used for surveillance purposes

Open Access•Weibin Cheng, Huifang Xu et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

HIV service data can complement existing HIV surveillance systems for MSM in China, though it may underestimate the HIV prevalence (HSS+ data contains people whose status is already know, while service data contains people who were initially negative or people of unknown status). HIV service data can be used for surveillance purposes, when prerequisite variables are collected from a large number people, if the quality assessment is conducted

Open Access•Stephen W Pan, Maya Durvasula et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2018

In China, some health departments and gay community-based organizations have begun to offer home-based HIV testing kits in order to augment test uptake among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, HIV test preferences and motivations for home-testing among MSM in China are not well understood. The HIV testing preferences of 803 MSM throughout China were evaluated using single-item assessment and a discrete choice experiment (DCE). In both the …

In 2007, we recruited 167 MSM in Beijing, China by peer-referred social network sampling. Each participant then …

Yuhua Ruan, Stephen W Pan et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2011

Men who have sex with men (MSM) are of immediate concern in China's HIV epidemic. In 2008, approximately 2.5-6.5% of China's eight million MSM were HIV positive, while MSM represented 11% of all new HIV cases. Two factors that will in-part determine HIV-transmission dynamics among MSM, are sexual mixing patterns and the social networks which shape them. Sexual mixing patterns and social networks of Chinese MSM, however, remain poorly understood w…
