  • Media Format Matters

Jamy Li, Mohsen Ensafjoo•ARTICLE•Journal of Radio & Audio Media•2024

A dataset of shortform audio-only tweets with video and text controls is used to analyze whether a tweet’s media format and topic influence user engagement with the tweet. Audio tweets were more engaging than text or video tweets by the same users, linking engagement to media format. Highly engaging audio tweets may have had different topics than highly engaging text or video tweets and different content characteristics than low engaging audio tw…

  • Embedding artificial intelligence in society

    Open Access•Simone Borsci, Ville Lehtola et al.•ARTICLE•AI & Society•2023

The European Union (EU) Commission’s whitepaper on Artificial Intelligence (AI) proposes shaping the emerging AI market so that it better reflects common European values. It is a master plan that builds upon the EU AI High-Level Expert Group guidelines. This article reviews the masterplan, from a culture cycle perspective, to reflect on its potential clashes with current societal, technical, and methodological constraints. We identify two main ob…

  • Weakness exploitation

Jamy Li, Mark Chignell•ARTICLE•Explorations in Media Ecology•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Existing theories of technology transitions cannot predict what new technological paradigm will supplant the currently leading, internet-enabled graphical user interface paradigm. This article introduces a preliminary approach (‘weakness exploitation’) to explain the rise and fall of four technology ‘empires’: print, television, the internet and socially interactive devices (such as robots, chatbots and internet of things devices). The approach i…

  • Plant Robot for At-Home Behavioral Activation Therapy Reminders to Young Adults with Depression

Open Access•Ashwin Sadananda Bhat, Christiaan Boersma et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2021

Adolescents with depression who participate in behavioral activation therapy may find it hard to be motivated to perform tasks at home that their therapists recommend. We describe the initial design and usability evaluation of a home device (“PlantBot”) that could be used to remind young adults with depression at home of their behavioral activation therapy-related tasks. The prototype features electronics in a two-layer base, with a fake plant on…

  • Communicating Dominance in a Nonanthropomorphic Robot Using Locomotion

Open Access•Jamy Li, Andrea Cuadra et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 23

Dominance is a key aspect of interpersonal relationships. To what extent do nonverbal indicators related to dominance status translate to a nonanthropomorphic robot? An experiment ( N = 25) addressed whether a mobile robot's motion style can influence people's perceptions of its status. Using concepts from improv theater literature, we developed two motion styles across three scenarios (robot makes lateral motions, approaches, and departs) to com…
