  • Daily Modernism

    Elizabeth Podnieks•PREPRINT•2024•Cited by: 5

In contrast to autobiographies, which are intended for a public audience and can be read as a novel, diaries have traditionally been thought of as the private record of a person's life. In Daily Modernism Elizabeth Podnieks shows that the diary can and should be read as both autobiography and fiction. Redrawing established boundaries between genres, Podnieks builds a broad critical and theoretical range on which she maps the diary as an aesthetic…

  • The Synergy Between You’

    Elizabeth Podnieks•ARTICLE•Life Writing•2021•References: 6

In this article I examine representations of mother/caregiver relationships in what I am calling a new genre: matroethnography. The term fuses the prefix matro (Latin root for mater) with ethnography; and further, signals a conflation of matro with the auto (autobiography) in autoethnography, itself a hybrid genre from the fields of life writing, anthropology, and sociology. Driven by auto/biographical and autoethnographical impulses, matroethnog…

  • Textual Mothers / Maternal Texts

Elizabeth Podnieks, Andrea O’Reilly•EDITOR•BOOK•Textual Mothers / Maternal Texts•2010

Textual Mothers/Maternal Texts focuses on mothers as subjects and as writers who produce auto/biography, fiction, and poetry about maternity. International contributors examine the mother without child, with child, and in her multiple identities as grandmother, mother, and daughter. The collection examines how authors use textual spaces to accept, negotiate, resist, or challenge traditional conceptions of mothering and maternal roles, and how the…

  • Raising Awareness of Abuse of Older Persons

Elizabeth Podnieks, Sue Wilson•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion, Spirituality…•2004

Churches can play a critical role in the prevention of elder abuse and neglect by fostering heightened public awareness of elder mistreatment, as well as providing services to families and others at risk for perpetrating abuse. This paper describes a pilot government-funded project to raise awareness of elder abuse in faith communities. The project seeks to support the faith community in its efforts to prevent and address elder abuse. The objecti…

    Elizabeth Podnieks•ARTICLE•Life Writing•2004•References: 5

We live, as we are everywhere reminded, in an era where the term ‘self’ and its attendant meanings inform our daily concerns and preoccupations. From the late twentieth century to the present, the literary genre broadly known as life writing has flourished. This article examines how computer technology has made it possible for millions of people to set up online diaries, personal home pages, personal web logs (blogs) and webcams for the sole purpo…

  • The Ultimate Astonisher

    Elizabeth Podnieks•ARTICLE•Frontiers A Journal of Women…•1994

It is by now a commonplace that feminist scholars, responding to the call to expose these half-truths, have been re-opening the doors of modernist literary history in order to admit women writers into a canon that has for too long excluded them. Virginia L. Smyers stresses that women, including Dorothy Richardson, Bryher, Sylvia Beach, Djuna Barnes, Mary Butts, Frances Gregg, Marianne Moore, May Sinclair, Amy Lowell, Harriett Weaver, Gertrude Ste…
