Towards a new grammar of schooling: The effects of system-wide implementation of the project-based pedagogy ‘Real-World Learning’ (RWL) on teaching and learning at a Canadian public school board
This paper answers Mehta and Datnow’s (2020) call for research on schools that have disrupted the traditional educational practices known as the grammar of schooling. Performing identity: Identity formation in the teenage live theatre audience
Can traditional live theatre affect the identity formation of teenagers? Drawing upon a six-year, qualitative study of Canadian, independent school live theatre audiences and a review of identity formation and audience studies, this paper offers three findings of interest to high school English teachers. These speak to the need for English teachers to design their programme of theatre-going in light of students’ digital habitus, to establish prot…
There's nowhere to go: Counting the Costs of Extreme Weather to the Homeless Community
People experiencing homelessness are vulnerable to extreme weather in unique ways. The entrenched inequalities that underpin disaster vulnerability are compounded by extreme isolation and the stress of transient living on mental and physical health. However, the impacts of extreme weather on the homeless in Australia are largely undocumented and rarely incorporated in emergency planning. Interviews with and surveys of emergency and homeless servi…

Nietzsche Studies as Historical Philosophizing
This essay is one of ten contributions to a special editorial feature in The Journal of Nietzsche Studies 49.2 (Autumn 2018), in which authors were invited to address the following questions: What is the future of Nietzsche studies? What are the most pressing questions its scholars should address? What texts and issues demand our urgent attention? And as we turn to these issues, what methodological and interpretive principles should guide us? The…
On Richard Schacht's Nietzsche
Schacht's 1983 book remains a valuable resource for thinking philosophically about Nietzsche. In this article, I examine the book's treatment of two fundamental interpretive issues regarding (respectively) how Nietzsche values, and what he values. I argue that Schacht misinterprets Nietzsche as a value realist, by failing to see that Nietzsche means his descriptive use of value to refer not to “so-called values,” but to genuine or full-fledged va…

A Journalist's Duty? Continuity and change in local newspaper reporting of recent UK general elections
Research studies of political communications at the local or constituency level are scarce. There are few detailed analyses of local newspapers' coverage of the constituency campaign or any systematic account of local journalists' attitudes towards election reporting. This paper seeks to redress this neglect by providing a longitudinal overview and analysis of local newspaper coverage of the local campaign in the 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2001 UK gene…

Israel's Water Policies
During the negotiations between Egypt, Israel and the United States on the future of the territories occupied by Israel in 1967, the questions least frequently raised in the Western media have been those concerned with the resources of these territories, both human and material, and their economic importance for Israel. When attention did centre on the subject, its main focus was Sinai oil and its future availability to Israel after the signing o…
