Assessment of 14 C and CO 2 in atmospheric air and pine needles in Gliwice, Poland
We present a short database of the mole fraction of CO 2 and 14 CO 2 in atmospheric air samples from an urban area in Gliwice, Silesia, Poland. The research covered a period from August 2023 to July 2024. A new laboratory air sampler stand was established to monitor carbon dioxide levels in Gliwice, giving the possibility to determine CO 2 levels in the air using appropriate instruments to collect the air samples, extract CO 2 from them, and thus…
Characteristics of Pine Needles Exposed to Pollution in Silesia, Poland
Here, we present the results of carbon isotope and elemental analysis of one-year-old Pinus Sylvestris L. needles collected in 2021 from 10 sampling sites in a highly populated and industrialized area of Poland. The needles were exposed to air pollution for one year. The chemical analysis of the samples was performed using different methods: radiocarbon analysis by accelerator mass spectrometry, stable isotope analysis using isotope ratio mass sp…
Characteristics of Pine Needles Exposed to Multi-Source Pollution in Silesia
We present here the analysis of the radiocarbon concentration and the components deposited on 2-year-old Pinus sylvestris L . needles collected in 2021, which were exposed to air contaminants for approximately two years. The needles were collected from seven sampling sites located near roads, households, and industrial factories in Silesia, the most industrialized part of Poland. The radiocarbon concentration was investigated using liquid scintil…
Radiocarbon, Trace Elements and Pb Isotope Composition of Pine Needles From a Highly Industrialized Region in Southern Poland
We determined the chemical composition of pine needles to monitor environmental contamination in an urban forest environment in the most industrialized part of southern Poland. The concentrations of radiocarbon ( 14 C), trace elements (Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Ba, Ce, Pb) and the Pb isotope composition were measured in needles from Pinus sylvestris L. growing in nine urban forests near five factories. The investigated young pine needles were c…
Carbon Isotopic Research of Pinus Sylvestris L. Growing in the Southern Poland (near Kędzierzyn-Koźle, Dąbrowa GÓrnicza Katowice and Olesno)
In this paper we present data from the measurements of carbon isotopes (Δ 14 C and δ 13 C) from α-cellulose extracted from pine tree-rings. The samples were collected in four forests located in the most industrialized part of Poland, where coal mining and coal-based energy are an important branch of industry. The investigated period of time (1975–2012) covers the period of development in coal mining and other industry sectors. Stable isotope comp…
Human Activity Recorded in Carbon Isotopic Composition of Atmospheric CO 2 in Gliwice Urban Area and Surroundings (Southern Poland) in the Years 2011–2013
In this paper, a record of the 14 C and 13 C isotope content of atmospheric CO 2 for Gliwice is presented for samples collected on a weekly basis in the years 2011–2013. In addition, measurements were performed on the early and late wood from the annual rings of pine trees from five sites located 3–6 km from the atmospheric CO 2 sampling point. The concentration of 14 C in CO 2 samples from the air was much lower relative to the concentration of …
Anthropogenic CO 2 Emission Records in Scots Pine Growing in the Most Industrialized Region of Poland from 1975 to 2014
Stable carbon isotope ratios and radiocarbon ( 14 C) concentrations in samples of pine wood (AD 1975–2012) from 3 sites, as well as needles (AD 2012–2014) collected from 15 sites, in a heavily urbanized area in proximity to heavy industrial factories in Poland were analyzed as bio-indicators of CO 2 emissions. The sampling sites were located at different distances from point sources. The stable isotopic composition was determined using an isotope…
Carbon Isotope Composition of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide in Southern Poland
Southern Poland is home to numerous large mining and energy industry facilities, which consume relatively great amounts of fossil fuels. Temporal and spatial distribution of CO 2 emissions to the atmosphere were estimated on the basis of 13 C and 14 C isotope measurements in atmospheric CO 2 and in α-cellulose from pine tree rings. The Suess effect was evaluated in the atmospheric CO 2 from the High Tatra Mountains (Kasprowy Wierch) and the urban…
Carbon Isotopes in Tree Rings
New records of δ 13 C and Δ 14 C values in annual rings of pine and oak from different sites around the world were obtained with a time resolution of 1 yr. The results obtained for Europe (Poland), east Asia (Japan), and South America (Peru) are presented in this paper. The δ 13 C and radiocarbon concentration of α-cellulose from annual tree rings of pine and of the latewood of oak were measured by both accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and liq…
