The "model minority" myth (MMM) has far-reaching implications for Asian Americans in many settings, including medicine. Perceived Subtle Gender Bias Index
In this article, we present the development and validation of the Perceived Subtle Gender Bias Index. Given the inherent difficulty in identifying and measuring the perceptions of subtle gender biases, this index provides researchers and interventionists with a tool that does not require participants to identify/label an event as a gender bias incident. This article explored the range in teacher expectations held for Somali Bantu refugees using content analysis of one-on-one interviews with teachers who taught Somali Bantu students at an elementary school in Chicago. This cross‐sectional study examined (a) the impact of in‐group (own‐group conformity pressure) and out‐group (perceived discrimination, stereotype confirmation concern) race‐related stressors; (b) the direct effect of 2 in‐group‐ (private regard, centrality) and 1 out‐group‐oriented (public regard) racial identity factors; and (c) the potential protective role of these identity factors on the impact of stressors on the anxiety of A sian Pacific I…
A Life Domains Perspective on Acculturation and Psychological Adjustment
The study articulates a contextual approach to research on acculturation of immigrants, suggesting that the relationship between acculturation and adjustment is dependent on the cultural demands of the life domains considered. The current paper reviews literature on the academic performance of Asian Americans with a critical eye toward understanding the influence of discrimination on this process. Specifically, this study seeks to understand the extent to which researchers have gathered sufficient knowledge to dispel “conventional knowledge” of Asian Americans as model minorities. Psychological distress and adjustment of Vietnamese refugees in the United States
The purpose of this study was to examine how pre- and postmigration factors affect the psychological distress and adjustment for a community sample of Vietnamese refugees resettled in the United States. The sample included a substantial proportion of ex-political detainees who experienced a particularly large number of traumatic events prior to migration.
