  • The interaction of tobacco retailer density and rurality with tobacco use prevalence in Kentucky

Open Access•Shyanika W Rose, W Jay Christian et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2026

PURPOSE: Tobacco retailer density is a key correlate of tobacco use prevalence in the United States, but this relationship has typically been examined in urban areas. We examined the relationship between retailer density and tobacco use across Kentucky counties, a state with high smoking rates and a substantial rural population. METHODS: We obtained a list of tobacco retailers from the 2021 Kentucky Synar program, used for minor's access inspecti…

  • Adult tobacco product use patterns across the urban–rural continuum: The longitudinal Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (Path) study, 2016–2023

Open Access•Jing Zhang, Shyanika W Rose et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Rural Health•2026

PURPOSE: To determine the association between adult tobacco/nicotine product use over time and residence location (urban, suburban, town, rural), controlling for demographics. METHODS: Data from Waves 4-7 (2016-2023) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study (N = 18,590 adults) were analyzed using survey-weighted logistic regression to evaluate location and time differences in likelihoods of current, daily, and established u…

Eugene M Talbot, Ollie Ganz et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2026

  • Urban–rural disparities in oral nicotine pouch sales and flavors in the United States

Open Access•Lei Xu, Saber Feizy et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

ONP sales exhibit significant urban-rural disparities, with rural areas showing higher per capita sales overall, but urban areas showing stronger preferences for flavored products and greater price responsiveness. As a result, regulatory measures targeting flavors or pricing may have a greater impact in urban areas compared to rural ones

  • Online Tobacco Advertising and Current Chew, Dip, Snuff and Snus Use among Youth and Young Adults, 2018–2019

    Open Access•Megan C Diaz, Elexis C Kierstead et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Greater exposure to tobacco advertising online is associated with greater odds of smokeless use among surveyed youth and young adults. This effect of social media marketing exposure on smokeless use outweighs the mitigating impact of existing tobacco control policies. The findings underscore the need for strong advertising regulation of evolving tobacco products, including smokeless products, on social media and surveillance of digital marketing …

  • Characterising advertising strategies and expenditures for conventional and newer smokeless tobacco products

Open Access•Steven Emery, Steven Binns et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2022

Advertising expenditures for nicotine pouches have recently exceeded conventional ST product advertising and nicotine pouches are being promoted nationally. Marketing surveillance as well as understanding consumer appeal, perceptions and consumption are critical next steps in tracking potential uptake of these new products

  • Twitter discourse on nicotine as potential prophylactic or therapeutic for Covid-19

Open Access•Ramakanth Kavuluru, Jiho Noh et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2022

  • Oral nicotine marketing claims in direct-mail advertising

Open Access•Lauren Czaplicki, Minal Patel et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2021

Our results provide an early indication of marketing claims used to promote oral nicotine. The strategies documented, particularly the use of language to highlight oral nicotine is tobacco-free, may covey these products as lower-risk to consumers despite the lack of evidence or proper federal authorisation that oral nicotine products are a modified-risk tobacco product . Future research is needed to examine consumer perceptions of such claims

  • Perceptions of Use Patterns and Health Consequences Associated With Mentholated Cigarettes Among U.S. Adults

    Open Access•Allison Glasser, Alexis A Barton et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2020

Despite declines in overall cigarette smoking in the United States, menthol cigarette smoking prevalence has increased among young adults (18-25 years) and remains constant among older adults (26 years and older). Disparities in menthol cigarette use exist, with higher prevalence among younger adult smokers and among racial/ethnic minority populations. Menthol in cigarettes has been shown to play a role in increasing smoking initiation and making…

  • Health claims made in vape shops: An observational study and content analysis

Kimberly G Wagoner, Micah Berman et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2019

Many vape shops displayed e-cigarette health claims, which are all now FDA prohibited. These claims could mislead consumers and influence behaviour. Findings highlight the need for retailer education, continued surveillance, enforcement specific to advertising and research on consumer perceptions of claims

  • The Association Between Menthol Perceptions and Support for a Policy Ban among US Smokers

    Jessica M Rath, Marisa Greenberg et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity & Disease•2018

Fewer current menthol smokers support a menthol ban than current non-menthol smokers given its effect on their preferred product. Given the large proportions of smokers who have misperceptions of the health consequences and addictive properties of menthol, there is a moral imperative to inform those who use these products. Findings suggest the need for tailored messaging strategies targeted to reach menthol smokers who will be most impacted by a …

  • Adolescent tobacco coupon receipt, vulnerability characteristics and subsequent tobacco use: Analysis of Path Study, Waves 1 and 2

    Shyanika W Rose, Allison M Glasser et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2018

One in 13 US youth (7.6%) received coupons. Vulnerable youth had the greatest odds of coupon receipt. Coupon recipients had greater odds of tobacco use among never users, trying a new tobacco product and current use. Coupon bans, limits on youth coupon exposure, stronger age verification, pack inserts or restricting coupon redemption may help reduce tobacco use among adolescents, particularly for those at greatest risk

  • Misperceptions of harm among Natural American Spirit smokers: Results from wave 1 of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (Path) study (2013–2014)

Jennifer L Pearson, Amanda Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2016

The majority of NAS smokers inaccurately believes that their cigarettes are less harmful than other brands. Given the brand's rapid growth and its more common use in vulnerable groups (eg, young adults, lesbian, gay, bisexual, 'other' or 'questioning' adults), corrective messaging and enforcement action are necessary to correct harm misperceptions of NAS cigarettes
