The Uses of Hopelessness
In this response to Røkenes and Jornet as part of the special issue Centering Affect and Emotion Toward Justice and Dignity in Science Education , we celebrate the contributions they make as they analyze Norwegian teenagers grappling with hope and hopelessness as part of a disciplinary unit on environmental sustainability. We discuss various ways of treating hope and hopelessness as emotional configurations and sensemaking tools. We draw on alter…
Attempting Decoloniality in a Youth Climate Campaign
This article examines how fossil fuel divestment organizers at the University of Toronto (UofT) attempted to be in right relation with Indigenous organizations and students on campus by integrating Indigenous knowledges around relationality and countering/contesting Eurowestern relational practices. By examining the dialog of a workshop where Fossil-Free UofT discussed their hopes, concerns, and strategies for practicing right relationality, we a…
Resituating situated learning within racialized and colonial social relations
This conceptual paper makes a theoretical intervention into situated learning and communities of practice theories, arguing that they must account for social relations of racialization and colonialism. I contend that the epistemologies and ontologies of a community of practice are embedded in social relations; therefore, neglecting power dynamics dilutes theorizations of learning, participation, resistance, and identity. I draw on vignettes from …
Radical Shifts
In this paper, I unpack how youth organizers became politicized activists through their engagement in the prefigurative practices of the fair trade movement. Prefiguration refers to the practices of a movement that are embedded in and reproduce their shared political visions; prefigurative politics allows social movement groups to embody their politics through their interactional practices, their tactical repertoires, and their outwardly oriented…
Learning in and for collective action
Collective action matters: out in the streets around us where people are reshaping the world through powerful protests. We see the significance and impact of collective action in uprisings around t
Pedagogies of snark
In this paper, we examine the relationships between rage and humour as politicizing forces among youth climate activists. In the context of FossilFree UofT, a university-based climate action campaign, we traced the learning and political development of activists engaged in a Women's Caucus. We argue snark served the pedagogical purpose of grievance construction and identity development as it enabled participants to express rage, take an agentic s…
Politicization in Process
In this article, we explore longitudinal video data from the student activist group Fossil Free UofT to analyze what it means to become politicized. We argue that politicization is a sociocultural learning process, not merely a process of conceptual development or cognitive change, but a simultaneous process of conceptual, practical, epistemological, and identity development. In the analytic sections, we tease apart aspects of politicization, sho…
Contradictions of Solidarity
In this article, we trace the racialized history of the environmental movement in the United States and Canada that has defined the mainstream movement as a default white space. We then interrogate the turn to solidarity as a way to escape/intervene in the racialized and colonial underpinnings of mainstream environmentalism, demonstrating that the practice of solidarity itself depends on these same racial and colonial systems. Given the lack of t…
Fight the power
In this paper, I employ situated learning theory to explore gendered processes of marginalisation and conscientisation in a social movement organisation. Using a student activist organisation as a case study, I explain women's awareness of and resistance to masculine performances of leadership and decision-making through the concept of gendered communities of practice and legitimate peripheral participation. I explore how gender inequality is per…
SolidarityTM
Ethical labeling campaigns have become a central means for diffusing and negotiating conflicts between social movements and market actors. Fair Trade was a pioneering ethical label and, by many accounts, a success. For nearly a decade, United Students for Fair Trade (USFT) activists worked to build the reputation of the Fair Trade Certified (FTC) label, but in Fall 2011 they withdrew their support and urged ethical consumers to do the same. This …
