  • Preliminary results on the applicability of neutron activation analysis (NAA) to identify cherts from the Munsungun Lake Formation, Maine, USA

    Open Access•Nathaniel Kitchel, B L Macdonald et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2023•References: 8

Red chert attributed to the Munsungun Lake Formation, Maine, USA is common in late Pleistocene fluted‐point‐period archaeological sites located throughout the New England states and Quebec, appearing more frequently than any other material type in the region. Despite the assumed association between red Munsungun chert and fluted‐point‐period sites, until recently, it was not possible to link red chert artifacts from these sites to a specific sour…

  • Red Chert Quarries in the Munsungun Lake Formation

Nathaniel Kitchel, Nathaniel R Kitchel et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 3

Red chert attributed to the Munsungun Lake geologic formation located in northern Maine is common in terminal-Pleistocene, fluted-point-period lithic assemblages throughout New England. A visually identical material also appears in some later-period sites in coastal Maine. Until recently no bedrock source for this red chert showing convincing evidence of precontact use was known. Here we present the NKP site complex, a series of quarry-related st…

  • Confirming a Cultural Association at the La Prele Mammoth Site (48CO1401), Converse County, Wyoming

    Open Access•Madeline E Mackie, Todd A Surovell et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2020•Cited by: 13•References: 58

Archaeologists have long subjected Clovis megafauna kill/scavenge sites to the highest level of scrutiny. In 1987, a Columbian mammoth (Mammuthus columbi) was found in spatial association with a small artifact assemblage in Converse County, Wyoming. However, due to the small tool assemblage, limited nature of the excavations, and questions about the security of the association between the artifacts and mammoth remains, the site was never included…

  • Younger Dryas-Aged Fluting, Cold, and Time Budgeting in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains

Spencer R Pelton, Joshua R Boyd et al.•ARTICLE•PaleoAmerica•2016

We argue that variation in Younger Dryas-aged fluting in the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains was primarily conditioned by cold-mediated time budgeting concerns. Foragers that lived in cold environments had more time to flute projectile points during prolonged periods of downtime relative to those in warmer, southerly environments. We show that fluting meets the expectations of a time budgeting model because (a) its frequency is negatively correl…

Open Access•A Strau, André Straus et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2016•Cited by: 15•References: 16
