  • Area-level deprivation and preterm birth

    Open Access•Rekha Mehra, F M Shebl et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2019

Even among commercially-insured women, area-level deprivation was associated with increased risk of preterm birth. Similar to individual socioeconomic status, area-level deprivation does not have a threshold effect. Implementation of policies to reduce area-level deprivation, and the screening and treatment of maternal mediators may be associated with a lower risk of preterm birth

  • Transforming prenatal care

    Open Access•Jeannette R Ickovics, Jessica B Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2019•Cited by: 1

Every 8 seconds a baby is born in the United States. Maternal and newborn care are the nation's most expensive clinical services, and despite spending more per capita on health services, the United States experiences worse perinatal outcomes than most other developed countries, and even worse than many developing countries when it comes to maternal and infant mortality, preterm birth, and other comorbid conditions. We established a transdisciplin…

  • Psychological and relational correlates of intimate partner violence profiles among pregnant adolescent couples

    Open Access•Jessica B Lewis, Tami P Sullivan et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2017•References: 60

We sought to identify relationship and individual psychological factors that related to four profiles of intimate partner violence (IPV) among pregnant adolescent couples: no IPV, male IPV victim only, female IPV victim only, mutual IPV, and how associations differ by sex. Using data from a longitudinal study of pregnant adolescents and partners (n = 291 couples), we used a multivariate profile analysis using multivariate analysis of covariance w…

  • Masculine Ideology, Sexual Communication, and Sexual Self‐Efficacy Among Parenting Adolescent Couples

    Open Access•Melanie K Norton, Megan V Smith et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 34

This study examined the relationship between traditional masculine role norms (status, toughness, anti‐femininity) and psychosocial mechanisms of sexual risk (sexual communication, sexual self‐efficacy) among young, low‐income, and minority parenting couples. Between 2007 and 2011, 296 pregnant adolescent females and their male partners were recruited from urban obstetrics clinics in Connecticut. Data regarding participants' beliefs in masculine …

  • Cluster Randomized Controlled Trial of Group Prenatal Care

Jeannette R Ickovics, Valerie A Earnshaw et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 32

Objectives. We compared an evidence-based model of group prenatal care to traditional individual prenatal care on birth, neonatal, and reproductive health outcomes. Methods. We performed a multisite cluster randomized controlled trial in 14 health centers in New York City (2008–2012). We analyzed 1148 pregnant women aged 14 to 21 years, at less than 24 weeks of gestation, and not at high obstetrical risk. We assessed outcomes via medical records …

Open Access•T Kershaw, Alexandrea Murphy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 55

The study objective was to describe relationship adjustment and its association with mental and physical quality of life for young couples expecting a baby. 296 young pregnant couples recruited from urban obstetric clinics reported on relationship strengths (e.g., equity, romantic love, and attractiveness), relationship risks (e.g., attachment, intimate partner violence), external family support, relationship adjustment, and mental and physical q…

  • Associations of a Sexually Transmitted Disease Diagnosis During a Relationship with Condom Use and Psychosocial Outcomes

    Open Access•Angus E Reid, Allecia E Reid et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Community…•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 29

Few studies have examined whether and how receiving an sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis while in a romantic relationship relates to condom use and psychosocial sexual outcomes. Using dyadic data, we examined associations of a personal or a partner's STD diagnosis during a relationship with condom use, monogamy intentions, condom intentions and attitudes, and STD susceptibility and communication. Because beliefs about how the STD was a…

Open Access•Heather Sipsma, Anna Divney et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2012•References: 7

CONTEXT Adolescents’ desire for a pregnancy has been explored more among females than among males. A more comprehensive understanding of teenagers’ pregnancy desires is needed to inform pregnancy prevention efforts and to support couples as they undergo the transition to parenthood. METHODS In an observational cohort study conducted in 2007–2011 at clinics in Connecticut, data were collected from 296 couples (females aged 14–21 and their partners…

    Open Access•Golan Shahar, John H Porcerelli et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American…•2010•References: 51

In an attempt to illustrate the relevance of psychoanalytic theory and research to behavior medicine, an empirical investigation was conducted of females treated at a high-risk pregnancy specialty clinic (N = 58). Drawing from psychoanalytic object relations theory, it was hypothesized and confirmed that use of projection as a defense mechanism during pregnancy, superimposed on simplistic object relations, predicted an erosion of patient-provider…

    T Kershaw, Trace S Kershaw et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 34

Objectives. We sought to determine whether an HIV prevention program bundled with group prenatal care reduced sexually transmitted infection (STI) incidence, repeat pregnancy, sexual risk behavior, and psychosocial risks. Methods. We conducted a randomized controlled trial at 2 prenatal clinics. We assigned pregnant women aged 14 to 25 years (N = 1047) to individual care, attention-matched group care, and group care with an integrated HIV compone…

  • Developmental change in the position of the fetal human larynx

    Open Access•Urania Magriples, Jeffrey T Laitman•ARTICLE•American Journal of Physical…•1987•Cited by: 2•References: 13

The position of the mammalian larynx has been shown to be an important determinant in breathing, swallowing, and vocalizing patterns. While the growth of the adult human larynx has been studied extensively, detailed examination of fetal development has not been undertaken. Thus, crucial developmental change in the fetal period and the effects of this change on normal maturation are still unclear. This study has examined the development of the lar…
