Neighborhood socioeconomic deprivation, perceived neighborhood factors, and cortisol responses to induced stress among healthy adults
Incidence of Disability Among Children 12 Months After Traumatic Brain Injury
Objectives. We examined the burden of disability resulting from traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) among children younger than 18 years. Methods. We derived our data from a cohort study of children residing in King County, Washington, who were treated in an emergency department for a TBI or for an arm injury during 2007–2008. Disabilities 12 months after injury were assessed according to need for specialized educational and community-based services …
Improving Firearm Storage in Alaska Native Villages
Objectives. We determined if the installation of gun cabinets improved household firearm storage practices. Methods. We used a wait list, randomized trial design with 2 groups. The “early” group received the intervention at baseline, and the “late” group received it at 12 months. Up to 2 gun cabinets were installed in each enrolled home, along with safety messages. In-person surveys were conducted at 12 and 18 months to determine the proportion o…
Association of the Built Environment With Physical Activity and Obesity in Older Persons
Objective. We examined whether older persons who live in areas that are conducive to walking are more active or less obese than those living in areas where walking is more difficult. Methods. We used data from the Adult Changes in Thought cohort study for a cross-sectional analysis of 936 participants aged 65 to 97 years. The Walkable and Bikable Communities Project previously formulated a walkability score to predict the probability of walking i…
A prospective study of household smoking bans and subsequent cessation related behaviour
Objective: To assess the degree to which smokers living with a full household ban on smoking change their cessation related behaviour. Design, setting, and participants: Prospective cohort study; follow up of a population based cohort of 1133 smokers, identified from a 1997 telephone survey of adult Oregonians. After a median of 21 months, 565 were located and reinterviewed. Main outcome measures: Quit attempts, time until relapse, and smoking ce…
Formal education and back pain
OBJECTIVES: To summarise the scientific evidence on the relation between educational status and measures of the frequency and the consequences of back pain and of the outcomes of interventions among back pain patients, and to outline possible mechanisms that could explain such an association if found. DESIGN: Sixty four articles published between 1966 and 2000 that documented the association of formal education with back pain were reviewed. MAIN …
Patient-Physician Racial Concordance and the Perceived Quality and Use of Health Care
BACKGROUND: Patients from racial and ethnic minority groups use fewer health care services and are less satisfied with their care than patients from the majority white population. These disparities may be attributable in part to racial or cultural differences between patients and their physicians. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether racial concordance between patients and physicians affects patients' satisfaction with and use of health care. METHODS:…
Evaluation of a public-private certified nurse-midwife maternity program for indigent women
OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the impact of a public-private certified nurse-midwife program on prenatal and delivery outcomes among medically indigent women. METHODS: A population-based quasi-experimental design was used to compare 1 intervention county with 2 nonintervention counties. RESULTS: The program significantly reduced the number of women who received no prenatal care and the risk of acquiring less than adequate prenatal care. Reducti…

Exposure to hair-coloring products and the risk of multiple myeloma
An interview study of persons diagnosed with multiple myeloma between 1977 and 1981 and suitable control subjects was conducted to test the hypothesis that exposure to hair dyes increases the risk of multiple myeloma. Among women, there was little evidence that prior regular use of hair dyes (odds ratio [OR] = 1.0; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.70, 1.4) or prior employment as a hairdresser (OR = 1.1; 95% CI = 0.43, 2.7) increased risk; however…
Underreporting of diabetes on death certificates, King County, Washington
We estimated the reporting of diabetes on death certificates for persons known to have diabetes. Surveillance of 19 hospitals and two paramedic emergency medical services during 12 months in Seattle and King County, Washington, ascertained acute ischemic heart disease events for persons with diabetes and yielded 1235 persons with suspected ischemic heart disease. Mortality was 23.6%, and 41% of death certificates listed diabetes. The reporting of…
Community-level comparisons between the grocery store environment and individual dietary practices
Evaluating community-based nutrition programs
A pilot test of a survey of grocery store product displays was conducted to measure the amount of health-education information provided and the proportion of the display devoted to "healthier" products. Inter-rater reliability ranged between 0.73 and 0.78 for the healthiness indices and between 0.30 and 0.67 for the health education measures. Test-retest reliability ranged from 0.44 to 1.0
