Unpacking Ethnic-Racial Messages and Coping Socialization Profiles: Family Relationship Quality and Demographic Differences
The current study aimed to 1) identify patterns of ethnic-racial and coping socialization among Black emerging adults, and 2) investigate profile differences in demographics and family relationship quality (e.g., communication and closeness). Six-hundred and three Black emerging adults (Mage = 18.63, 78% Female) at a Minority Serving Institution completed an online survey. We used latent profile analysis (LPA) with three ethnic-racial socializati…
Racial Discrimination Distress and Psychological Well-being: The Moderating Role of Ethnic-Racial Socialization in African American Emerging Adults
Racial discrimination-related stress is assumed to be inherent in the frequency of the experience; consequently, few studies have examined individual differences in its appraisal. The current study addresses this gap by investigating racial discrimination distress, measured as reported appraisal and frequency, to improve the assessment of race-related risk. The interaction effect of racial discrimination distress and ethnic-racial socialization (…
Standing on the shoulders of a giant: The legacy of Robert M. Sellers
Robert M. Sellers, PhD, most known for his influential and highly cited Multidimensional Model of Racial Identity (MMRI), is one of the most prolific and foundational Black scholars in psychology. From racial identity theory development and measurement to conceptual and methodological innovations in studying the lived experiences of Black people, Sellers' scholarship centers on the lives of Black communities. Sellers' mentorship and contributions…
Parent socialization and anti-racist ideology development in White youth: Do peer and parenting contexts matter
The development of anti-racist ideology in adolescence and emerging adulthood is informed by parent socialization, parenting style, and cross-race friendships. This study also examined whether these associations varied based on authoritative parenting and the number of cross-race friendships. Positive parent racial attitudes toward racially and ethnically minoritized populations predicted higher anti-racist ideology in the independent contexts of…
Engagement Coping Responses to Adolescents’ Negative Racialized Experiences
This study examined thematic patterns of parents' engaged coping messages in response to their adolescents' negative race-based experiences. Ten focus groups were conducted with 73 Black parents from a Southeastern city (73% female). Using modified grounded theory, narratives that supported adolescent engaged coping were coded for three ethnic-racial socialization messages, the perpetrator, and the setting, followed by inductive (open) coding. Th…
Neighborhood‐level predictors of African American and Latinx parents' ethnic–racial socialization
Few studies examine how neighborhood structural factors (e.g., socioeconomic status [SES] and diversity) and perceived disorder may influence the messages parents communicate to their youth about race/ethnicity. Guided by the integrative model and social disorganization theory, this study examines how parents' ethnic-racial socialization messages (ERS) are shaped by the broader environment. Data come from the MacArthur Studies of Diversity in Mid…
