    Open Access•Ahmet Fidan, Hoan N Bui•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 14

The present study examines intimate partner violence (IPV) reported by a sample of women in Zimbabwe to explore factors associated with the problem. The effects of gender inequalities on the likelihood of IPV vary with types of violence, but husband's patriarchal behaviors increase the likelihood of all forms of violence. The study suggests the i…

  • Immigration and Crime

    Open Access•Hoan N Bui•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Theoretical…•2014

Theories and perspectives on immigration and crime mainly focus on the roles of individual motivation, cultural conflicts, the social context of immigration resettlement, and assimilation in shaping immigrants' behavior and adaptation outcomes. Research has provided some support for these theories and perspectives, but most of them, except the acculturation model, have not been systematically tested. Because immigrants are not a homogeneous group…

    Open Access•Hoan N Bui, Merry Morash•ARTICLE•Feminist Criminology•2008•Cited by: 7•References: 13

Data from in-depth interviews with Vietnamese immigrant women residing in the United States and both interviews and a focus group with service providers for abused Vietnamese immigrants suggest a complex relationship among job market context, changing norms about appropriate feminine behavior, immigration adaptation, masculinity, and men's violence against intimate partners. During immigration resettlement, men's economic status can worsen, there…

    Open Access•Merry Morash, Hoan Bui et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2008•Cited by: 3•References: 10

The study identifies predictors of women's remaining entangled in abusive relationships. The sample includes 57 women in one Vietnamese American enclave. Women's beliefs in maintaining an intact family, patriarchal decision making, and fear of their partners characterized women remaining. To a lesser extent, seeking help from a variety of places characterized women who escaped, and concern with achieving important goals, number of children, finan…

Merry Morash, Hoan Bui et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2008•References: 26

A grounded theory approach and sensitizing concepts were used to study U.S. best practices for addressing intimate partner violence against 55 Vietnamese American women interviewed at the beginning and end of a twelve‐month period. Advocacy agency, police, and court contact were associated with women's decisions to leave abusive relationships. Also associated were Vietnamese‐speaking professionals and referrals between helping sources. Women's ob…

    Open Access•Merry Morash, Hoan Bui et al.•ARTICLE•Violence Against Women•2007•Cited by: 16•References: 3

Intensive interviews with 129 Vietnamese women immigrants in a northeastern metropolitan area provided data to examine risk factors for sexual, physical, and verbal abuse. Patriarchal gender arrangements in the family, arguments about fulfilling gender and family roles, and partner's threat that divorce would compromise the participant's immigration status put women at risk…

This article examines how economic, emotional and social-power related factors affect victims' behavior in favor of prosecution during police investigations. Data drawn from police records and police narrative reports indicated that mutual charge, dual arrest, the severity of assaults and the severity of injuries suffered by victims negatively affected the victims' behavior in favor of prosecution. These findings suggest that the norm of unequal …
