Plotting the Whole Story
The social utility of redemption
The present study examined conditions under which negative autobiographical memories are narrated with redemptive themes, a normative narrative structure in the U.S., in which a negative or emotionally difficult life experience is described as having a positive conclusion. U.S. college student participants were asked to provide a written essay of a negative autobiographical experience. They were randomly assigned to experimental conditions that v…
Shared reality, memory goal satisfaction, and psychological well-being during conversational remembering
Conversational remembering, or sharing autobiographical memories with others, occurs frequently in everyday communication. The current project examined how the experience of shared reality with a conversation partner when describing autobiographical memories to them can operate to enhance the self, social, and directive uses of a recalled memory and explored the role of shared reality experienced as a result of conversational remembering in psych…
The influence of weight on psychosocial well-being in diabetes
Weight is a key influence on the psychosocial outcomes for people with diabetes, but it operates differently in type 1 versus type 2 diabetes. By further examining the unique interaction between disease type and weight status we may be able to improve psychological well-being among affected individuals of all sizes
Describing autobiographical memories
The current investigation examined how experiencing a shared reality during the social reconstruction of the past might relate to communicators’ perceived authenticity and self-esteem. In two experiments, participants were randomly assigned to describe an autobiographical memory to an audience who had either a positive or negative attitude toward the memory topic. Participants then reported perceptions of shared reality, authenticity, and self-es…
Diabetes causal attributions
This study investigates the relationships among causal attributions, internalized stigma, and self-blame, along with downstream health and life satisfaction consequences for individuals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Data were analyzed from the Diabetes, Identity, Attributions, and Health study. Participants diagnosed with either type 1 or type 2 diabetes (N=363) were included in the analysis. Results indicated that the relationship between cau…
Memories of me, memories of we
To more fully understand the complex relationship between self-knowledge and significant autobiographical memories, two studies examined the degree to which agency and communion orientations were consistently represented across self-views and autobiographical memories, and measured the strength of these relationships in relation to prototypical thematic norms in autobiographical recall. Participants completed measures assessing agentic trait and …
Feminism, Gender, and Agentic and Communal Themes in Narrative Identity
Preferred level of categorization as a strategy to manage chronic illness-related identity among individuals with type 1 versus type 2 diabetes
The present investigation examined social identification management among individuals affected by chronic illness. Because diabetes is a chronic medical condition that consists of a broad superordinate group with two nested subgroups of differing relative status (type 1 versus type 2), it is well-suited to an examination of positive identity management strategies used by individuals with chronic illness. A cross-sectional survey was conducted on …
Universal stories
For millennia, narratives have been a primary mode of oral discourse. Narrative presentation of information has been shown to facilitate interpersonal and group communication. However, research indicates that narratives are more than merely an adaptive mode of communication. Narrative is a fundamental – and perhaps foundational – element of social and cultural life. The present article posits that the centrality of narrative in social life is due…
A riot on campus
When a group commits a transgression, members who identify closely with the group often engage in defensive strategies in which they are less likely to experience guilt and shame in response to the transgression than are less identified group members. Subsequently, highly identified group members are often less willing to offer reparations to the injured parties. Because appropriate emotional responses and reparations are critical to community re…
Self-Expansion through Fictional Characters
The prevalence of entertainment media in everyday life might offer unexpected social opportunities. The present paper examined whether cognitive overlap with the character and self-expansion occur as a result of exposure to fictional characters. Results of two studies indicated that transportation into a narrative leads to greater cognitive overlap with the character and perceived self-expansion. Providing a distinction between these two concepts…
