Moral Progress: Improvement of Moral Concepts, Refinements of Moral Motivation
In their recent book Buchanan and Powell claim that there is moral progress. Their analysis focuses on increasing inclusiveness, yet they also suggest other dimensions as possible indicators-improvements in the concept of morality and refinements in moral motivation. In the following I present empirical data on changes in moral understanding that occurred during the second half of the 20 th century in Germany. These changes concern an increasing …

Interplay of Formal and Material Role-Taking in the Understanding of Suicide among Adolescents and Young Adults
A tentative stage model of the development of the understanding of suicide motives is constructed on the basis of interview data from 113 male and female subjects of different SES backgrounds between 14 and 22 years of age. At lower stages only momentary objective external incidents are cited as motives for committing suicide; later, incidents are related to specific individual motivations and standards and placed in an extended time horizon; fin…
Interplay of Formal and Material Role-Taking in the Understanding of Suicide among Adolescents and Young Adults
Difficulties in measuring interpersonal understanding, ego development, or moral development are at least partly the result of our inability to identify the structural core of development and to demarcate structure unequivocally from content. A comparison of Loevinger’s and Selman’s theories shows how cognitive and sociocognitive structures may be used to reconstruct a large portion of test items. However, both theories point to a nonstructural r…
From Super-Ego and Conformist Habitus to Ego-Syntonic Moral Motivation. Sociohistoric Changes in Moral Motivation
The text focuses on the structure of moral motivation, i.e. the way different types of concerns motivating norm conformity are anchored in the personality. It claims a socio-historic change: Older generations tend to submit to the dictates of a super
Anerkennung moralischer Normen

Commonsense understandings about suicide as a resource for coping with suicidal impulses
A cognitive model of levels of conceptualization and reasoning about suicide is related to nonpsychiatric youth
Eine weibliche Moral: Differenz als Ressource im Verteilungskampf
The development of internal migration in the Federal Republic of Germany during the last few decades shows that commuting is becoming more and more a substitute for moves over long distances.... This paper tries to explain this 'mobility transition' by means of a model of individual choice between commuting and moving. The model is also able to account for changes in structural components. The decision-model is empirically tested by using methods…
Konflikt- und Rückzugspotentiale in spätkapitalistischen Gesellschaften / Potentials of Conflict and Withdrawal in Late Capitalist Societies
Late capitalist societies increasingly prove incapable of generating the modal personality that would correspond to the imperatives under which the political and economic subsystems operate. This is due to a process of the sharpening of the crisis of adolescence in which system-dysfunctional solutions are gaining ground. In terms of the interactionist approach the problem specific to the adolescent phase, i. e. the problem of identity formation, …
