  • Das „Heilige“ Jahr 1525

    Alexander Koller•ARTICLE•Mitteilungen des Instituts für…•2025

The Holy Year 1525 Historians have repeatedly analysed individual years as historical units of time. These annual studies often do not examine events shaping a particular year in isolation, but instead contextualise and bring together seemingly unrelated processes and developments to form an overall picture. A study of the year 1525 seems particularly worthwhile for such an analysis due to the different asso ciations and memories it evokes (e. g…

  • Giovanni Federico Madruzzo, kaiserlicher Botschafter in Rom (1581–1586), im Kontext der Positionierung seiner Familie zwischen Kaiser und Papst zu Beginn der Frühen Neu zeit

  • Das Ringen um die Auslieferung und die Überstellung von Giacomo Paleologo aus den habsburgischen Erbländern an die römische Inquisition (1562–1582)

    Alexander Koller•ARTICLE•Mitteilungen des Instituts für…•2023

Between 1581 and 1584, Giovanni Francesco Bonomi represented the Pope and Roman Curia at the Imperial court of Rudolf II. His official correspondence is currently in preparation for publication. The spectacular case of Giacomo Paleologo, who was wanted by the Roman Inquisition, played a special role in the papal diplomat’s agenda. After his arrest in Moravia and imprisonment in Klosterneuburg, Paleologo was handed over to the Roman authorities by…

  • Compositionality in Computational Linguistics

    Open Access•Lucia Donatelli, Alexander Koller•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Linguistics•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Neural models greatly outperform grammar-based models across many tasks in modern computational linguistics. This raises the question of whether linguistic principles, such as the Principle of Compositionality, still have value as modeling tools. We review the recent literature and find that while an overly strict interpretation of compositionality makes it hard to achieve broad coverage in semantic parsing tasks, compositionality is still necess…

  • Climbing towards NLU: On Meaning, Form, and Understanding in the Age of Data

    Open Access•Emily M Bender, Alexander Koller•CONFERENCE•Proceedings of the 58th Annual…•2020

The success of the large neural language models on many NLP tasks is exciting. However, we find that these successes sometimes lead to hype in which these models are being described as "understanding" language or capturing "meaning". In this position paper, we argue that a system trained only on form has a priori no way to learn meaning. In keeping with the ACL 2020 theme of "Taking Stock of Where We've Been and Where We're Going", we argue that …

  • Architectural Design at Bagan and Angkor: A Comparison

    Open Access•Alexander Koller•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•2017•References: 13

This study looks at the crucial features of Cambodian and Burmese monumental architecture at the peak of the two empires. By necessity, the overwhelming majority of sites are religious, as residential structures of almost any type, with the exception of some monastic buildings, were made of perishable materials and do not survive

  • Lexicalization and Generative Power in CCG

    Open Access•Marco Kuhlmann, Alexander Koller et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 1

The weak equivalence of Combinatory Categorial Grammar (CCG) and Tree-Adjoining Grammar (TAG) is a central result of the literature on mildly context-sensitive grammar formalisms. However, the categorial formalism for which this equivalence has been established differs significantly from the versions of CCG that are in use today. In particular, it allows restriction of combinatory rules on a per grammar basis, whereas modern CCG assumes a univers…

  • Incremental, Predictive Parsing with Psycholinguistically Motivated Tree-Adjoining Grammar

    Open Access•Vera Demberg, Frank Keller et al.•ARTICLE•Computational Linguistics•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Psycholinguistic research shows that key properties of the human sentence processor are incrementality, connectedness (partial structures contain no unattached nodes), and prediction (upcoming syntactic structure is anticipated). There is currently no broad-coverage parsing model with these properties, however. In this article, we present the first broad-coverage probabilistic parser for PLTAG, a variant of TAG that supports all three requirement…
