Shaping Transdisciplinary Research with Partners on Climate Projects
A Relational Unfolding
In this article we unfold our pedagogical process of how we have shifted our perspectives as transdisciplinary researchers and educators. Through a collaborative autoethnographic self‐study, this article draws on our personal and reflective experiences as collaborating researchers, educators, graduate students, and professors in a year‐long Collaborative Transdisciplinary PhD Pilot Program on Climate Action. We adopt an affective‐relational‐cogni…
Multiple futures literacies
It is no surprise that concern for the future is on the rise. Several catastrophes obscure our future(s) imaginary, such as climate change, a global pandemic, racial inequality, and political polarization. Students are feeling a disconnect between what they learn in classrooms and the futures that populate their media platforms. Futures literacies provides one proposed pedagogical intervention that takes up future(s) possibility as a context for …
Energy literacy
Energy literacy is a developing field of research and practice that provides a comprehensive way of understanding how energy functions in the universe, on the earth, and in our social and personal lives. This literature review, building on an increasing momentum of research across various disciplines, outlines current energy literacy scholarship focused on a range of educational contexts (i.e., K-12, higher and post-secondary, teacher education a…
Transdisciplinary and interdisciplinary programmes for collaborative graduate research training
This paper documents a case study examining collaborative transdisciplinary (TD) and interdisciplinary (ID) graduate programmes at the University of British Columbia (a large, public, research-intensive university in Canada) – serving as a model for other universities globally. TD and ID programmes in higher education can ultimately create a new generation of researchers who are capable of contending with complex problems by equipping them with a…
Systems beings
A multitude of global challenges that society grapples with, including climate change, social injustices, and economic disparities, persist largely due to the shortcomings of effectively responding to complex systems. In this article, we consider adopting systems literacy as a comprehensive educational approach to navigate in complex systems. We advocate for a systems literacy pedagogy that employs an affective-relational-cognitive (ARC) framewor…
Energy literacy
Energy is fundamental to our existence. And yet, energy remains difficult to understand and discuss, particularly the impacts or limitations of certain energy systems and how energy functions in sociocultural contexts. Bridging theory and practice, energy literacy expands what we know about energy and how we may think about it in the world around us. Acknowledging how the world's energy supply and use directly connects to the climate emergency, t…
Collaborative learning on energy justice
To explore the complexities of energy literacy in a global educational context, this article draws on research from a 7-month collaborative educational research project titled International Youth Deliberation on Energy Futures (IYDEF), which engaged 207 high school students from 22 schools in 18 countries in developing the education needed to activate just and sustainable energy transitions. Key to student learning were activities to build an awa…
Digital storytelling going viral
This article considers digital storytelling as an emerging media practice for public education and action about environmental justice. Digital storytelling presents examples of how media texts can go viral and have a substantial impact on public discourse, while also providing multimodal communication to study and experience for social action. Using frameworks of both narrative empathy and the rhetoric of empathy, while drawing on a viral Greenpe…

Thirdspace in Willie Doherty’s Photo-Text Diptychs of Northern Ireland
This article explores the visual artist Willie Doherty’s use of the photo-text diptych in works produced in Northern Ireland between 1985 and 1992. An examination of Doherty’s photo-text diptychs demonstrates what the postmodern geographer Edward Soja has called ‘Thirdspace’ – a flexible way of thinking about fluctuating milieux of ideas, events, appearances and representations, and how these affect the ways geographical spaces change, both mater…
Eco-Haptic Photography
This article examines how the landscape photography of bogs in Rachel Giese's The Donegal Pictures addresses the pressing concerns occluded by ubiquitous tourist photography, lending itself to an analysis of contemporary visual culture and bogs. This article also argues that Giese's photographs of the Irish landscape can be viewed as part of visual culture using what Laura Marks has coined in The Skin of the Film (2000) as haptic visuality—seeing…
Navigating Irish ecocriticism
Staging the trauma of the bog in Marina Carr's By the Bog of Cats
Marina Carr's By the Bog of Cats ... examines the psychological, cultural, and environmental importance of bogs to Irish collective consciousness. My essay offers a detailed look into the history of Irish boglands from an ecocritical point of view, and argues that these landscapes are not peripheral, but actually central to Irish studies and the environments in which Irish literature unfolds. Bogs have existed on the margins of society and have b…
