The role of goals, actions, and outcomes in the sense of agency
The sense of agency refers to the sense of control we feel over our actions and their effects in the environment. We propose a new framework that defines the sense of agency as consisting of three components: the presence of a goal, the sense of control of the self, and the sense of control of the environment. Across six experiments, we altered participants' sense of agency by manipulating control of their actions and outcomes in reference to a g…
The Relationship Between Perceived Agency and Trust in Robots
It is well known that the competency and integrity of a robot impacts how much a person will trust it. In this paper, we suggest that perceived agency of the robot is also an important determinant of how much people will trust a robot. Experiment one showed that people trusted a robot that followed social norms more than a robot that did not follow social norms. We also found that people trusted robots that followed social norms more than robots …
The Perception of Agency
The perception of agency in human robot interaction has become increasingly important as robots become more capable and more social. There are, however, no accepted or consistent methods of measuring perceived agency; researchers currently use a wide range of techniques and surveys. We provide a definition of perceived agency, and from that definition we create and psychometrically validate a scale to measure perceived agency. We then perform a s…
