STEM faculty’s perspectives on adopting culturally responsive pedagogy
Culturally responsive pedagogy has received increasing research attention and has been applied in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in higher education to support an increasingly diverse student body in recent years. This study aimed to uncover the pedagogical machinations that govern how STEM faculty members teach, interact and engage with their culturally and ethnically diverse students in the United States of America. How Ethnicity, Expression, and Study Design Influence First Impressions of Approachability
Over two studies, participants (total N = 642) rated a community sample of photographs of Black, East Asian, and White males who were smiling or portraying a neutral expression to see how participant ethnicity, target ethnicity, and target expression influence judgments of approachability (i.e., trustworthiness, friendliness, and threat). We also examined how a commonly used study design, in which each participant is asked to evaluate different g…
I am Malawian, Multicultural or British
We aimed to better understand multidimensional remote acculturation to South African, United States of America (US), and United Kingdom (UK) cultures among 144 thirteen- to seventeen-year-old (M = 15 0.28, SD = 1.06; 43.1% female; 36.6% Black African, 23.9% Southeast Asian, 21.8% Multiracial, 16.2% White, 1.4% Other) urban adolescents in Malawi. Adolescents completed questionnaires measuring remote acculturation, cultural exposure, parent-adolesc…
Extrinsic Value Orientation and Affective Forecasting
We examined affective forecasting errors as a possible explanation of the perennial appeal of extrinsic values and goals. Study 1 found that although people relatively higher in extrinsic (money, fame, image) compared to intrinsic (growth, intimacy, community) value orientation (REVO) are less happy, they nevertheless believe that attaining extrinsic goals offers a strong potential route to happiness. Study 2's longitudinal experimental design ra…
Differences in Life Satisfaction and School Satisfaction Among Adolescents From Three Nations
Past research shows that higher well-being is reported by adolescents who live in individualistic rather than collectivistic nations. Such cross-national differences may be due to the amount of autonomy support adolescents receive from authority figures. To examine this hypothesis, in the current study, 322 adolescents from Denmark, South Korea, and the United States completed self-report surveys that assessed adolescents' school and life satisfa…
