  • Taking drugs for exams

Roxana Schweighart, Sebastian Kruck et al.•ARTICLE•Social Work Education•2021

The present study carried out in Germany is concerned with social work students’ consumption of either non-prescribed medicine (e.g. amphetamine) or illegal drugs (such as cocaine) to improve their cognitive performance (neuroenhancement) during examinations. In the main study (n = 257), 16% reported to have consumed such substances, including more men than women and more older than younger students. The use of drugs was neither influenced by stu…

  • Hidden discrimination in front of social work’s own door

Susanne Götz, Mathias Blanz•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 15

The present article addresses a hidden discrimination of homosexual people working at Germany’s largest employers in the social area: the Catholic and Protestant Churches and their Charities. On the one hand many of their employees are social workers; on the other hand these organisations showed repeatedly homophobic tendencies in the past. The study surveyed online more than 200 homosexual persons working at these organisations. The results show…

  • Verhaltensorientierte Soziale Arbeit

    Mathias Blanz, Frank Como-Zipfel et al.•BOOK•Verhaltensorientierte Soziale…•2013

  • How do study satisfaction and academic performance interrelate? An investigation with students of Social Work programs

    Mathias Blanz•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social Work•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 2

An investigation of study satisfaction and academic performance in the study of Social Work is reported (N=514). The results show that satisfaction (a scale based on 13 items) and performance (undergraduate course marks) hardly correlate with each other (r=−0.05) and are influenced by different variables. Whereas study satisfaction is determined by ‘noncognitive’ factors such as motivation and course organization, academic performance is influenc…

  • Socio-structural characteristics of intergroup relations and identity management strategies

Open Access•Amélie Mummendey, Andreas Klink et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1999•References: 20

In a field study in East Germany, predictions by Social Identity Theory concerning relations among socio-structural characteristics of intergroup relations (stability, legitimacy, permeability) and identity management strategies (e.g. social competition) were examined. In general, East Germans were expected to consider their status position as inferior compared to West Germans. Moreover, depending on whether they regard such a status difference a…

  • Accessibility and fit as determinants of the salience of social categorizations

    Open Access•Mathias Blanz•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1999•References: 25

The present article proposes a theoretical model of factors affecting the salience of social categorizations. The model is strongly related to the accessibility×fit formulation by Bruner (1957) and to Oakes' (1987) functional perspective on category salience. The results of an experimental series using the ‘Who said what?’ paradigm are presented, which examined several hypotheses derived from the model. In Study I it was shown that the salience o…

  • Responding to negative social identity

Open Access•Mathias Blanz, Amélie Mummendey et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1998•References: 23

Taken from literature on social identity theory and social comparison theory, 12 strategies of identity management were identified as possible responses to negative social identity. A taxonomy with two orthogonal axes is proposed as theoretical organization of these diverse strategies. While the first axis considers responses as being either individual or collective, the second axis refers to the distinction between behaviours and cognitions. It …

  • Normative evaluations and frequency expectations regarding positive versus negative outcome allocations between groups

Open Access•Mathias Blanz, Amélie Mummendey et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1997•References: 14

Data from several recent studies consistently show a positive–negative asymmetry in social discrimination: within a minimal social situation tendencies towards ingroup favouritism which usually appear in allocations of positively valenced resources are absent in the domain of negatively valenced stimuli. The present study investigates whether this valence-asymmetry has any correspondence to variations in normative evaluations of positive versus n…

  • Perceptions of relative group size and group status

Open Access•Mathias Blanz, Amélie Mummendey et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Social…•1995•Cited by: 8•References: 27

The positive–negative asymmetry in social discrimination proposes a threshold for ingroup favouritism within the negative domain: in contrast to comparable studies dealing with in‐ and outgroup evaluations on positive attributes, ingroup favouritism does not occur when negative attributes are used. The present study focuses on two aspects of this threshold: it investigates processes, which may influence the absence of ingroup favouritism in the n…
