    Mai Lin Tjoa-Bonatz•ARTICLE•ICOFOM Study Series•2024

In the missionary museum “Forum der Völker”, founded by the Franciscan religious order, ethnographic objects – in particular ritual implements or religious art – were transferred to a Christian context by reinterpreting them as counter-images for the missionary task. Missionaries commodified devices of local worship and showed an ambivalence towards human remains and weapons. The museum’s collection was extended in the past thirty years by privat…

    Open Access•Mikael Hard, Mai Lin Tjoa-Bonatz•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 8

Global histories of technology tend to tell one-sided stories of transfer and exploitation, and they usually analyze the activities of large corporations, nation states or the military. Nine terracotta bricks and brick fragments, containing incised drawings of different types of buildings, were discovered at the large Muara Jambi temple complex in eastern Sumatra. Likely dating from between the second half of the ninth and the first half of the fourteenth centuries, these bricks contain the oldest graphic representations of Sumatran architecture. While two of these designs have been previously published, the brick images have no…

  • The megalithic complex of highland Jambi

Open Access•Dominik Bonatz, John David Neidel et al.•ARTICLE•Bijdragen tot de taal- land- en…•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 3

The highlands of Sumatra remain one of the most neglected regions of insular Southeast Asia in terms of history and archaeology. No comprehensive research program incorporating both a survey and excavations within a defined geographical or environmental zone has been carried out there since Van der Hoop (1932) conducted his study of the megaliths on the Pasemah plateau in the 1930s. Meanwhile, Van der Hoop's investigations and several other archa…
