Mythos - Geist - Kultur
Artisans, Artists and Hegel's History of Art
This article examines Hegel's use of the distinction between ‘artist’ ( Künstler ) and ‘artisan’ ( Werkmeister ) in light of recent discussion about the ‘end’ of art and the distinction betweeen art and craft that, as some have argued, has been central to the concept of the fine arts since the eighteenth century. Hegel does employ an important distinction between artist and artisan, but he does so within a larger account of the continuum of forms…
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel: Heidelberg Writings
This work brings together, for the first time in English translation, Hegel's journal publications from his years in Heidelberg (1816–18), writings which have been previously either untranslated or only partially translated into English. The Heidelberg years marked Hegel's return to university teaching and represented an important transition in his life and thought. The translated texts include his important reassessment of the works of the philo…

It includes essays by an internationally recognised team of Hegel scholars. The volume begins with Terry P…

Arendt and Hegel on the tragic nature of action
Among the sources of Hannah Arendt's philosophy of action is an unexplored one: the account of agency in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit . Drawing on a consideration of what has been called the `dramaturgical' character of Arendt's philosophy of action, the article compares the accounts of action in Arendt's Human Condition and in the `Spirit' chapter of the Phenomenology. Both works share a similar overall structure: in each case, the account of…
