Captive chimpanzee takes down a drone: Tool use toward a flying object
On 10 April 2015, a Dutch TV crew was filming at the Royal Burgers Zoo in Arnhem, The Netherlands. It was the intention to film the chimpanzees in the enclosure from close-by and from above with the means of a drone. When the drone came a bit closer to the chimpanzees, a female individual made two sweeps with a branch that she held in one hand. The second one was successful and downed the drone. The use of the stick in this context was a unique a…

Economics in Nature: Social Dilemmas, Mate Choice and Biological Markets
Since the development of game theory, the analysis of animal behaviour using the theories of economics has become a growing field of biological research in which models of games and markets play an important role. Studies of sexual selection, interspecific mutualism and intraspecific cooperation show that individuals exchange commodities to their mutual benefit; the exchange values of commodities are a source of conflict, and behavioural mechanis…
Postconflict Affiliation and Stress-Related Behavior of Long-Tailed Macaque Aggressors
Meat-eating by adult female Sumatran orangutans (Pongo pygmæus abelii)
Information about meat-eating behavior by wild orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) is scant. The first article about such a case dates from 1981. Since 1989, seven incidents of adult female Sumatran orangutans eating slow lorises (Nycticebus coucang) have been witnessed. Three females from two study sites were involved. In three cases the females were seen catching the prey. There are too few cases to conclude whether this behavior is typically female.
Food Competition Between Wild Orangutans in Large Fig Trees
Differences in Subadult Behaviors of Chimpanzees Living in Peer Groups and in a Family Group
Affiliation Between Aggressors and Third Parties Following Conflicts in Long-Tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis)
Tool use by chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes ) of the Arnhem Zoo community
Chimpanzees have a large repertoire of tool‐use behaviors. This study reports on the variety and the extent of tool use exhibited by the chimpanzees of the Arnhem Zoo community in The Netherlands, living in an enriched captive setting since 1971. The use of tools by 29 chimpanzees aged from 0 to 37 years was observed. We identified 13 types of tool use comparable to those found in the wild. Some of these types of tool use seem to be specific to t…
Behavior of conduct disordered children in interaction with each other and with normal peers
Postconflict social interactions among barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus)
Male dominance rank and reproductive success in primate groups
Intergroup competition and conflict in animals and man
Functional aspects of reconciliation among captive long‐tailed macaques ( Macaca fascicularis )
After an agonistic conflict between two animals, they may exchange affiliative social contacts. The function of this reconciliation behavior is thought to be the repair of the social relationship between the two opponents. We examined the hypothesis that reconciliation is socially effective because it may also lead to a reduction of the victim's acute stress. Reconciliation was studied in a well‐established captive group of long‐tailed macaques (…
