  • Racial disparities in psychotic disorder diagnosis

    Open Access•Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•World Journal of Psychiatry•2014

Psychotic disorder diagnoses are common in the United States and internationally. However, racial disparities in rates of psychotic disorder diagnoses have been reported across time and mental health professions. • Concurrent Validity of the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale for Clients with Schizophrenia

    Open Access•Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2007

Although the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) scale is a widely utilized instrument, little data on construct validity is available about its use with clients having schizophrenia. This study compared point-specific GAF scores with concurrent ratings of symptomatology and social and occupational impairments using the Functional Assessment Rating Scale (Ward & Dow, 1994). A linear multiple regression analysis of empirical data from investiga…

  • Substance abuse and psychosocial impairments among clients with schizophrenia

Robert C Schwartz, Randall L Hilscher et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2007

Substance abuse is one of the most common comorbid conditions among clients with schizophrenia. This study assessed correlates of current substance abuse severity not evaluated in past research (e.g., manic symptoms, traumatic stress, self-care deficits, interpersonal relationship problems), as well as factors previously shown to be associated with substance abuse among clients with schizophrenia (e.g., age, gender, depressive symptoms, psychotic…

  • Convergent Validity of the Beck Depression Inventory for Youth

    Open Access•Shannon D Smith, Robert C Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2004

This study investigated the convergent validity of the Beck Depression Inventory for Youth in a sample of 34 children (22 boys, 12 girls) who ranged in age from 7 to 14 years (M= 11.3, SD=2.3) by comparing scores with simultaneous ratings on the Children's Depression Inventory. Analysis indicated that the sets of scores correlated very strongly regardless of age or sex. Given that this Beck Depression Inventory has fewer items and is guided by a …

  • Relationship of Depression and Anxiety to Cancer Patients' Medical Decision-Making

    Open Access•Suni Petersen, Elisabeth Sherman‐Slate et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation of depression and anxiety to cancer patients' medical decision-making. Participants were 79 rural and urban cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The four decisional styles of the Decisional Processing Model were the independent variables. Dependent variables were anxiety and depression, measured by Spielberger's State-Trait Anxiety and the Center for Disease Control Depression Scale, respe…

  • Construct Validity of the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale for Clients With Anxiety Disorder

    Robert C Schwartz, Timia Del Prete-Brown•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2003

The Global Assessment of Functioning Scale is a widely used although poorly researched measurement of overall mental health or illness. This study investigated construct validity for clients with anxiety disorder. Analysis suggests that current suicidality was the most significant predictor of ratings. Current homicidality, work/school problems, and inability to care for oneself were not significantly correlated with scale ratings

  • Homicidality in schizophrenia

    Robert C Schwartz, Cynthia A Reynolds et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2003•References: 18

This study attempted to replicate the results of R. C. Schwartz, S. Petersen, and J. L. Skaggs (2001) by testing predictors of homicidality in a new sample of participants with schizophrenia. Results of multiple regression analyses showed that manic symptoms and substance abuse were significantly positively correlated with more extreme homicidality. Global Assessment of Functioning scale ratings were significantly negatively correlated with ratin…

  • Predictors of homicidal ideation and intent in schizophrenia

Robert C Schwartz, Suni Petersen et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2001

Correlations of age, gender, and psychosocial variables with ratings of current homicidal ideation and intent were investigated among psychiatric facility clients with schizophrenia. Multiple regression analyses revealed, irrespective of age or gender, significantly positive correlations of three psychosocial variables--manic symptoms, psychotic symptoms, and impaired global functioning--with homicidal ideation and intent. Implications for resear…

  • Critique of Recent Empirical Research on Insight and Symptomatology in Schizophrenia

    Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2000

During the past decade there has been a resurgence of interest in investigating the relationship between insight and symptomatology among clients with schizophrenia. The breadth and depth of the articles have dramatically increased over the past 10 years, including the number of empirical research studies. This article summarizes the strengths and limitations of the empirical research focused on the association between insight and severity of psy…

  • Reliability and Validity of the Functional Assessment Rating Scale

    Open Access•Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

The Functional Assessment Rating Scale was developed as a measure of psychiatric symptomatology and psychosocial impairments. This study was designed to report estimates of reliability and validity with a population of schizophrenic patients. The scale showed very good interrater agreement, test-retest reliability, construct validity, and concurrent validity, so the scale seems a useful measure of psychopathology which may be used to assess and m…

  • Correlates of Empathic Understanding among Neophyte Trainees in Psychotherapy

    Open Access•Stephanie G Puleo, Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1999

Results are summarized of an empirical study testing the associations among various academic, demographic, and personal characteristics and rated empathic understanding among 93 neophyte psychotherapy trainees from six universities. Multiple regression analyses suggested that completion of a graduate group counseling course with a specific personal growth component was the only characteristic significantly correlated with ratings of empathic unde…

  • Symptomatology and Insight in Schizophrenia

    Open Access•Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1998

The phenomenon of poor insight of clients with schizophrenia has recently received a great deal of attention; however, the relationship of the symptoms of illness and of poor insight is not fully understood. This study examined the relationship between ratings of symptomatology and ratings of insight deficits for 64 clients with schizophrenia. Symptomatology and insight were evaluated using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. Over-all funct…

  • Environmental Factors and Clients' Self-Disclosure in Counseling

    Open Access•Benjamin N Cohen, Robert C Schwartz•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1997

Self-disclosure by clients is regarded as a fundamental component of counseling, with increased self-disclosure being related to positive outcome of treatment; however, scant attention has focused on environmental characteristics that may facilitate self-disclosure among clients. An evaluation of prior research in this area leads to suggestions for studies on environmental factors and self-disclosure
