Directed forgetting of emotionally toned items and mental health
Item- and list-method directed forgetting paradigms have been used to study forgetting of emotionally toned items in clinical and control group populations for several decades. Meta-analysis of item-method studies found that clinical populations retained more remember- than forget-cued items of each valence. These effects were comparable to that shown by control populations for positive and negative items, but less than that shown by controls on …
Racial-ethnic identity development in children in a racial-ethnic minority group
White fears and native apprehensions
Motivational and cognitive factors have been used to explain negative attitudes toward out-group members. According to the integrated threat theory of prejudice, negative intergroup attitudes are predicted by proximal factors consisting of perceived threats from out-group members; these threats, in turn, are predicted by distal factors such as perceived differences in group status or negative out-group contact. In the present study, White and Fir…
Effects of own group success or failure on judgements of task performance by children of different ethnicities
Children in majority groups hold favourable attitudes toward members of their own group, whereas those in minority groups typically hold more favourable attitudes toward majority than own group members. It was expected that when evaluating task outcomes, majority group children would display own group favouritism, and minority children would show other group favouritism or ‘reverse ethnocentrism’. In this study, white and Native Indian elementary…

Evaluative Implications of the Response Language and the Judgment of Attitude Statements
Male and female introductory psychology students who held either favorable, unfavorable, or moderate attitudes toward legalized abortion judged a series of pro or con abortion statements on response scales which were either evaluatively congruent or incongruent with subject attitude. Accentuation theory predicts that when attitude, statement favorability and the response scale are congruent, subjects will accentuate the difference between accepta…
Effects of Race and Sex Upon the Attributions of Success and Failure
Male and female subjects rated an individual described as either male or female, white or native Indian who chose an upwardly or downwardly mobile occupation (teacher or store clerk). Previous research on sex role stereotyping suggests that males, but not necessarily females, anticipate female underachievement and failure. This finding was supported on a number of dependent variables. For example. female characters were rated as more expressive i…
The Effect of Attitude and Statement Favorability Upon the Judgment of Attitude Statements
Male and female introductory psychology students who held extreme attitudes toward legalized abortion judged the favorability of attitude statements on that issue. Both Sherif's social judgment theory and Helson's adaptation-level theory suggest an inverse relationship between judgment and subject attitude. Accentuation theory predicts that statement ratings reflect the congruency between attitude, value connotations of the rating scale, and the …
Occupational Differences and Attribution of Trait Adjectives to Ethnic Groups
The present study was designed to determine the influence of role, status and ethnic cues on stereotyping. 24 ethnic-occupation combinations were formed by completely crossing four ethnic groups (French Canadian, English Canadian, Indian, and Oriental) and six occupations, selected to represent high, middle and low status positions. Subjects rated one of the combinations on 56 trait adjectives. The ratings were factor analyzed, and four factors, …
Locus of Control, Latitude of Acceptance and Attitudes Toward Abortion
As part of larger research conducted in 1972 the present study sought to determine the relationship between personality variables and attitudes toward legalized abortion. 40 students who selected the most extreme pro or con alternatives on a legalized abortion attitude scale and on the evaluation dimension regarding the abortion concept on the semantic differential were asked to judge the degree of favorableness of pro and con statements about ab…
