  • Late Pleistocene Glaciation of the Kosciuszko Massif, Snowy Mountains, Australia

    Open Access•Timothy T Barrows, John O Stone et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

Late Pleistocene glaciation of the Australian mainland was restricted to a small area of the southeastern highlands. Geomorphic mapping of the area and exposure dating using the in situ produced cosmogenic isotope 10 Be provides evidence for at least two distinct glaciations. The Early Kosciuszko glaciation consisted of a single glacier advance before 59,300 ± 5400 years ago (Snowy River Advance). The Late Kosciuszko glaciation comprised three gl…

  • Early Human Occupation at Devil's Lair, Southwestern Australia 50,000 Years Ago

    Open Access•Chris Turney, Chris S M Turney et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2001

New dating confirms that people occupied the Australian continent before the earliest time inferred from conventional radiocarbon analysis. Many of the new ages were obtained by accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C dating after an acid–base–acid pretreatment with bulk combustion (ABA-BC) or after a newly developed acid–base–wet oxidation pretreatment with stepped combustion (ABOX-SC). The samples (charcoal) came from the earliest occupation levels …

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Iron Artifacts

    Open Access•Richard G Cresswell•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 12•References: 10

During the late 1960s, N. J. van der Merwe (1969) obtained 14 C measurements on 11 iron pieces, ranging in carbon content from medium carbon (0.22%) wrought iron (1.2 kg used) to high carbon (3.2%) cast iron (30 g), thereby demonstrating the feasibility of the technique for 14 C dating iron. In the early 1980s, Sayre et al. (1982) repeated two of van der Merwe's measurements, and carried out two analyses on a recently rediscovered Elizabethan(?) …
