  • Racial-Ethnic Socialization and Achievement: The Mediating Role of Academic Engagement

    Open Access•Meeta Banerjee, Deborah Rivas-Drake et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2017•Cited by: 3•References: 31

This brief report examined how racial socialization is directly and indirectly related to academic achievement for African Americans attending a predominantly White institution. We expected that students who received more racial socialization would exhibit better academic engagement and this, in turn, would help explain their academic achievement. The sample included 226 African American college students (76% female) between the ages of 18 and 22…

  • African American Fathers' Racial Socialization Patterns: Associations with Racial Identity Beliefs and Discrimination Experiences

    Open Access•Shauna M Cooper, Ciara Smalls‐Glover et al.•ARTICLE•Family Relations•2015•Cited by: 24•References: 15

Existing parenting frameworks have suggested that fathers' developmental histories and social experiences are important determinants of their parenting practices. Few studies, however, have examined how the larger racial context is related to the parenting and socialization practices of African American fathers. Using a profile‐oriented approach, this investigation examines how fathers' racial identity beliefs (racial centrality and regard) and d…

  • Racial socialization practices among African American fathers: A profile-oriented approach

    Shauna M Cooper, Ciara Smalls‐Glover et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2014•Cited by: 25•References: 24

Employing a latent profile analytic approach, this investigation identified racial socialization patterns among African American fathers. In addition, this study explored whether profiles varied by father and child sociodemographic characteristics. Participants were 166 African American fathers (M 32.20, SD 8.26) of adolescents (M 12.60, SD 2.20). Analyses revealed that a 5-cluster solution fit the data most optimally. Identified profiles were (a…

    Open Access•Justin L Williams, Ciara Smalls-Glover et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2014•Cited by: 9•References: 19

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of adolescents' beliefs about socialization from caregivers ("attributions") on the link between racial socialization and private regard. This research addresses the paucity of literature on adolescent attributions as a context for the relation between socialization and private regard. The independent roles of racial barrier, racial pride, and self-worth messages were examined. Ad…

  • Racial identity mediates the association between ethnic-racial socialization and depressive symptoms

    Enrique W Neblett, Kira Hudson Banks et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2013•Cited by: 36•References: 30

Ethnic-racial socialization has been positively linked with psychological adjustment; however, the mechanisms underlying this association remain unclear. In this study, the authors examined the mediating role of racial identity in the association between racial socialization and depressive symptoms. Participants were 211 African American young adults (62% female; mean age = 20.73, SD = 1.90) recruited from a predominately White southeastern unive…
