  • Filling the Network Gap in Research Ethics

Open Access•Susan M Wolf, Gillian Roehrig et al.•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•2026

Scientific research increasingly involves large, multidisciplinary teams networked across multiple institutions to develop new technologies. Despite the rise of complex research networks and big team science, there has been too little analysis to date of the ethical challenges facing these networks. The extensive literature on the ethical issues confronting individual researchers and small teams (the microlevel) and on the larger societal challen…

  • Value pluralism supports portfolio approaches in conservation

Open Access•Evelyn Brister, Yasha Rohwer et al.•ARTICLE•AMBIO•2026•References: 73

Portfolio approaches have gained support in conservation as they offer advantages similar to well-balanced investment portfolios. In this essay, we argue there are also ethical reasons to support portfolio approaches to conservation problems. First, we argue that value pluralism—the thesis that there are many diverse values, as opposed to a singular value—is the appropriate way to think about the value of ecosystems. We then argue that accepting …

    Evelyn Brister•ARTICLE•Social Epistemology•2021

Field philosophy is a method of philosophical practice. As such, it is open or neutral with regard to topic and content, to the social location of collaborators, and to the type of outcome or product that is its aim. With regard to its criteria, field philosophers may pursue philosophical collaborations in government, business, entertainment, religion, science, or other areas. In this paper, I respond to critiques of philosophers doing politicall…

  • Not the Same Old Chestnut

    Evelyn Brister, Andrew E Newhouse•ARTICLE•Environmental Ethics•2020

We argue that the wild release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) can be justified as a way of preserving species and ecosystems. We look at the case of a genetically modified American chestnut (Castanea dentata) that is currently undergoing regulatory review. Because American chestnuts are functionally extinct, a genetically modified replacement has significant conservation value. In addition, many of the arguments used against GMOs, espec…
