Future directions for sustainable consumption research and action
This article identifies ten priorities for future sustainable consumption research and action, prioritising questions of (in)justice. It emerged from a series of interdisciplinary exchanges between sustainable consumption scholars from across Europe, reflecting their expert perspectives and research practices.

Everyday circularities
This editorial article introduces the Special Issue (SI) ‘Everyday Circularities: Rethinking Consumption in Circular Transformations’. It begins by situating the contributions within the sociology of consumption and growing critiques of dominant Circular Economy frameworks, which have traditionally prioritised consumer acceptance and market-driven solutions. The SI challenges these assumptions by foregrounding the complex, embedded and uneven nat…
Everyday circularities
To highlight critical perspectives on the Circular Economy (CE) this conversation with Manisha Anantharaman and Sonia Dias considers often-overlooked Global South perspectives on everyday dynamics of circular transformation. In this conversation, we, Mary and Kersty, chat with Manisha (Sciences Po), a scholar in critical approaches to sustainability and circularity, and Sonia, a sociologist who works for WIEGO (Women in Informal Employment: Globa…
Beyond efficiency
Rebound effects remain an overlooked but critical challenge in circular economy transitions. While existing research predominantly frames rebound effects as economic, behavioural or technological phenomena, these perspectives fail to fully account for the social and material dynamics through which rebounds emerge. This commentary argues that social practice theories offer a more systemic approach to understanding rebound effects by shifting focus…
Policy and practice
Social sciences have seen a so-called practice turn, moving beyond a preoccupation with individual attitudes and behaviour towards the more contextually-embedded concept of social practices to understand drivers and change levers of social action. However, in the policy sciences engagement with Social Practice Theories (SPT) is relatively scarce. Approaches and studies endorsing behaviourist approaches continue to outnumber more sociological, rel…
Bringing the circular economy home – Insights from socio-technical perspectives on everyday consumption
Transitions toward a circular economy require a nuanced understanding of how change plays out in households in relation to the role of consumers and daily consumption practices. However, little policy and research attention has been paid to the complexities of achieving necessary transformations in everyday cultures of consumption and the possible challenges faced by citizens and householders in achieving a circular economy. As a result, we know …
Circular plastic consumption in everyday life
Plastic consumption is posing a critical challenge to global sustainability. Yet our understanding of the social and everyday dynamics of how and why people use plastics remains limited. Particularly, significant gaps in understanding exist concerning how plastics are embedded in households’ daily routines and practices and how this varies across different daily life settings. This article aims to bridge this gap by offering an in-depth explorati…
Gender imaginaries in energy transitions
The importance of gender is increasingly recognised in energy research, with growing awareness of the intersections of energy access and gender equity. Yet, a major knowledge gap exists regarding the role of professional intermediaries and institutions in reproducing and/or challenging gendered forms of energy exclusion, especially in the Global South. This paper addresses this gap by considering the gendered energy imaginaries of energy professi…
Brokering Gender Empowerment in Energy Access in the Global South
How do energy professionals in the Global South facilitate the brokerage of gender equity and empowerment in energy access? Energy sector professionals, including planners and members of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), are crucial development actors in off-grid contexts. They operate at the intersection between grassroots-level energy access in off-grid household and community buildings and overarching policy frameworks. However, despite t…
Can people talk about their past practices? Challenges, opportunities, and practical applications of biographic inquiry for geographic research on consumption
Within human geography, there is increasing interest in the application of theories of practice for understanding resource consumption and for pursuing sustainability goals. In stressing the routine, performative, and contextual dimensions of action, research on geographies of practice is faced with particular methodological challenges. A lively debate concerns the utility of talk‐based methods for investigating routine practices, such as those r…

Steering demand? Exploring the intersection of policy, practice and lives in energy systems change in Ireland
Recent advances in sociological investigations of energy-systems-change highlight the influence of a wide range of policies, beyond those typically considered relevant to energy, on energy demand. To this, a new field of (‘non-) energy policy’ scholarship is exploring the ways in which policies across multiple societal sectors ‘steer’ demand. However, much of this work has been conducted at the scale of institutions and systems, with comparativel…
Socio-technical transitions and dynamics in everyday consumption practice
Moving across the life course
This article connects existing mobility biographies research with social practice inquiries into the dynamics of consumption and examines the potential of a biographic, practice-centred approach for researching everyday practices. Following a critical review of the benefits and limitations of existing research on mobility biographies, the article explores some key ways in which a practice theory approach can be employed to reframe and extend how …
Innovations in sustainable consumption
The task of realising a transition to a more sustainable future represents one of the most pressing issues of our time.Addressing the increasingly challenging mix of economic, social, environmental and political issues at all scales necessitates new ways of thinking about and conceptualising change. It also requires innovative ways of integrating mutually complementary disciplinary perspectives and approaches, which is what this timely and pioneer…
