Theorising political belonging
Western political communities are in crisis. Previously, obstacles to the fundamental liberal-democratic commitment to equal citizenship emerged mainly from minority claims, and their experience of inequality. Currently, in contrast, a majoritarian crises has emerged from the other direction. Majority communities across the West are expressing high levels of frustration with diversity, identity-politics, immigration and social cohesion. These new…
Just What Is Ontological Political Theory Meant to do? The Method and Practice of William E. Connolly
This article provides a critical appraisal of the ontological method of political theorizing through an examination of the methodological development of the work of William E. Connolly. Connolly has often been taken as a paradigmatic figure of the ‘ontological turn’. This is not only because of the significance of his work in the field but because he is one of its major methodological articulators. However, there has been no systematic evaluation…
Multiculturalism and nationalism
Nationalism and multiculturalism seem to have opposed approaches to cultural diversity. However, recent calls for a “multicultural national identity” suggest the need for more nuances on this relation. This paper responds to these calls, and to some initial doubts, providing an account of political community, nationalism and multiculturalism conducive to fuller theorization of a multicultural form of national identity. To do this, it conceptualiz…

The concept of belonging
Contemporary diversity politics is mobilized around debates on the effects of diversity on political community and cohesion. However, social and political theory are deeply divided on the relation between that diversity, liberal–democratic citizenship, multiculturalism and social cohesion. This article argues that a focus on the concept of belonging, which is often employed but rarely examined in detail, illustrates the critical–normative divide …
Normative engagement across difference
This article addresses the problem of inter-normative engagement, of constructing dialogical interaction across substantive normative difference. Focusing on how this affects democratic and pluralistic contexts, it argues that a social-practice-based approach to normativity and reasoning offers unique resources to understand and frame such encounters. It specifically draws on pragmatism and the work of Richard Rorty to reframe normativity, author…
Democratic epistemology and democratic morality
Does the wide distribution of political power in democracies, relative to other modes of government, result in better decisions? Specifically, do we have any reason to believe that they are better qualitatively – more reasoned, better supported by the available evidence, more deserving of support – than those which have been made by other means? In order to answer this question, we examine the recent effort by Talisse and Misak to show that democ…
Contemporary Pragmatist Political Theory
Among traditions of political theory, pragmatism has experienced an especially tumultuous history. Lauded by some for the advantages they see in its robustly non-metaphysical approach to political thinking, it has more often suffered under the accusation that it entails a naive form of instrumentalism which yields only a complacent understanding of politics. And yet as a voice within nineteenth-, twentiethand twenty-first-century AngloAmerican so…
Beyond analytic and continental in contemporary political thought
In the division between analytic and continental thought, pragmatism has often been cast as a middle way. Fundamentally critical of each, it also shares resonances with both of these traditions. However, while this observation is common, remarkably little has been done to examine its truth in contemporary political thought. Drawing on recent trends in political theory, including ‘New Realism’, critical genealogical methods and a surge in pragmati…
Introduction
In philosophy and political theory, divisions come and go, but some persist despite being obviously problematic. The analytic and Continental divide is one such division. In political philosophy and political theory, the division has been particularly pronounced. Analytic and Continental thinkers are divided not only over substantial issues but also over the very nature of political theorising. In spite of this fundamental nature, theorists often…
