  • Is metal (still) a subculture? Considerations from the perspective of cultural history

    Peter Pichler•ARTICLE•Metal Music Studies•2023

To this end, three topics will be discussed. The first step is to look at the term subculture and its use in metal research from the perspective of cultur…

  • To the sources! On historical source criticism in metal studies

    Peter Pichler•ARTICLE•Popular Music History•2023

Metal studies is usually considered to be a fundamentally interdisciplinary field of research. Peter Pichler•BOOK•Metal Music, Sonic Knowledge, and…•2020

Research on the process of European integration is usually restricted to the political, economic and legal aspects of Europeanisation. Still, we do not know enough about "practiced Europeanisation" in terms of everyday life and popular culture. Here, Peter Pichler explores a new area of research. He links the latest insights into the cultural history of the European Union with interdisciplinary research on heavy metal as a subculture throughout E…

  • What Is the European Union? A Cultural Shared Risk Community

    Open Access•Peter Pichler•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary European…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In this commentary, the author continues his first reflections on European Union cultural history, which opened up this field and introduced the theory of ‘paradoxical coherence’. Revisiting sociological and cultural-historical works by Beck and Gumbrecht, he argues that the EU can be seen as a ‘cultural shared risk community’, the sources of identity-building and sense-making consisting of the European citizens’ shared cultural risks and fears. …

In this context, the author provides research with a first theoretical concept of EU cultural history which keeps a critical distance from EU-biase…
