The Current State and Limitations of Large Language Models-Based Surveys
사회과학자들은 빠르게 발전하고 있는 거대언어모델을 연구에 활용하기 위해 다양한 방법을 모색하고 있다. 여러 시도들 중 하나는 거대언어모델을 활용하여 설문조사를 실시하는 것이다. 인구사회학적 변수에 따라 사람들의 응답이 변하는 점에 착안하여, 거대언어모델에게 특정 인구사회학적 조건을 페르소나로 부여하고 이에 대한 응답을 수집하여 분석하는 방식이다. 본 글은 이와 같은 방법론의 현재 발전 방향을 파악하고, 사회학의 개념적 틀에서 총 세 가지 근원적 한계점이 있음을 지적한다. 첫째, 구조 속에서 일어나는 개인의 행위를 해석할 때 구조의 영향력을 과대평가 할 수 있다. 둘째, 사회적 사실이 특정 사회에 제한적으로 보편적이라는 특성을 반영하기 힘들다. 셋째, 우리가 사용하는 거대언어 모델은 사회 규범과 합치하도록 이미 내부 검열을 마친 상태이기 때문에 그 자체로 사회적 산물이며, 따라서 실제 여론을 반영…

데이터과학에 기반한 지식사회학 연구는 어떤 과정으로 수행되는가? 이러한 접근의 강점은 무엇이며, 연구 과정에서 염두에 두어야 할 사안들은 어떤 것이 있는가? 데이터과학과 사회과학을 융합하는 시도가 전 세계적으로 증가하고 있는 가운데, 실제로 연구를 수행하는 과정에서 사회과학 연구자들이 실질적으로 마주하게 될 어려움들을 소개한 연구는 드물다. 본 연구 노트는 저자들이 수행하고 있는 사회과학 지식장에 대한 비교사회학 연구를 사례로 하여 전산사회과학의 데이터 수집 및 분석 과정에서의 암묵지를 드러내고, 이와 관련된 방법론적 시사점을 강조한다. 저자들의 지식사회학 연구는 KCI와 SSCI의 사회과학 논문들을 다양한 데이터베이스를 활용해 수집하고 정제하는 것으로 시작되었다. 한국연구재단 데이터베이스와 OpenAlex 데이터베이스를 동일한 차원으로 분석할 수 있도록 전처리하는 과정 또한 필요했다. 한국과 …

Using data from the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (1998–2014), this study examines how various indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) (i.e. education, employment status, occupation, and earnings) are associated with the transition to first marriage for South Korean men and women. Results from discrete-time event-history analysis show that all SES indicators are strongly associated with the timing of marriage for men and that there is a cl…

이 연구는 한국 학계와 국제 학계의 지식 담론 구조의 차이를 조명하고 한국 학계의 현재를 진단하고자 하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 2011년부터 2018년까지 KCI와 SSCI에 사회학 분야로 출판된 논문들을 대상으로 텍스트 분석을 활용하여 지식 생산 구조에 있어 두 학계 사이에 간극이 존재하는지 여부를 실증적 분석을 통해 고찰하였다. SCI급 학술지로 대표되는 국제 저명 저널의 출판에 인센티브를 주는 현행 제도는 국제 학계에 대한 편향성을 강화한다는 점에서 비판을 받았지만, 한국 학계가 국제 학계와 비교하여 어떠한 학술적 차이를 지니는지에 대한 경험적 논의는 상대적으로 드물었다. 연구의 결과는 크게 세 가지로 요약된다. 첫째, 한국 학계와 국제 학계에서 사용되는 고유어와 공유되는 용어 비중을 살펴본 결과 두 학계 간의 유사성이 높지 않다는 점을 확인하였다. 둘째, 구조적 토픽모형을 통해 국…
