  • Seroprevalence of anti-Sars-CoV-2 antibodies among blood donors from December 2020 to June 2021 in Koutiala district, Mali

Open Access•Fara Wagbo Temessadouno, Jean Gilbert Ndong et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2023

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the virus associated with coronavirus disease (COVID-19). At the time of the study, little data on the level of exposure of the population in Koutiala district in Mali to SARS-CoV-2 was available. Although blood donors are not representative of the general population, a COVID-19 seroprevalence estimate in this population was intended to assess the extent of community transmission, se…

  • High seroprevalence of antibodies against Sars-CoV-2 among healthcare workers 8 months after the first wave in Aden, Yemen

Open Access•Rami Malaeb, Nagwan Yousef et al.•ARTICLE•PLOS Global Public Health•2022

The true burden of COVID-19 in Yemen is underestimated. The healthcare system is dysfunctional and there is a high shortage of health care workers in the country. Testing for SARS-CoV-2 remains limited and official surveillance data is restricted to those who are severe or highly suspected. In this study, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) aimed to conduct serological screening using rapid tests for asymptomatic staff at the MSF Aden Trauma Center to…

  • Shifting to Tele-Mental Health in humanitarian and crisis settings

Open Access•Khasan Ibragimov, Miguel Palma et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2022

Tele-MH services were perceived to be a feasible alternative solution to in-person therapeutic interventions in humanitarian settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, they were not considered suitable for all patients in the contexts studied, especially survivors of sexual or interpersonal violence, pediatric and geriatric cases, and patients with severe MH conditions. Audio-only technologies that lacked non-verbal cues were particularly ch…

  • The factors affecting household transmission dynamics and community compliance with Ebola control measures

Open Access•Grazia Caleo, Jennifer Duncombe et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2018

Transmission occurred primarily in a few large households, with prolonged transmission and a high death toll. Return of a survivor to the village and more effective implementation of control strategies coincided with increased compliance to control measures, with few subsequent cases. We propose key recommendations for management of EVD outbreaks based on this experience

  • The cost of child health inequalities in Aotearoa New Zealand

Open Access•Clair Mills, Papaarangi Reid et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2012

This preliminary study suggests that health sector spending is skewed towards non-Māori children despite evidence of greater Māori need. Persistent child health inequities result in significant societal economic costs. Eliminating child health inequities, particularly in primary care access, could result in significant economic benefits for New Zealand. However, there are conceptual, ethical and methodological challenges in estimating the economi…

  • Provision of antiretroviral treatment in conflict settings

    Open Access•D O’brien, Sarah Venis et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2010

With commitment, simplified treatment and monitoring, and adaptations for potential instability, HIV treatment can be feasibly and effectively provided in conflict or post-conflict settings

  • Universal access

    Open Access•D O’brien, Clair Mills et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2009

The Pool region of the Republic of Congo is an isolated, conflict-affected area with under-resourced and poorly functioning health care services. Despite significant AIDS-related mortality and morbidity in this area, and a national level commitment to universal HIV care, HIV has been largely neglected. In 2005 Médecins Sans Frontières decided to introduce HIV care activities. However, in this setting of high basic health care needs, limited medic…
