  • What racial disparities exist in the prevalence of perinatal bipolar disorder in California

Open Access•Mercy Eigbike, Rebecca J Baer et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

Differences in bipolar disorder diagnoses exist across racial categories and when compared to White women, Multiracial women had the highest odds of bipolar disorder and thus represent a perinatal population of focus for future intervention studies. The increased burden of mental health problems among Multiracial women is consistent with recent research that employs disaggregated race data. More studies of Multiracial women are needed to determin…

  • The Association Between Longer Maternal Leukocyte Telomere Length in the Immediate Postpartum Period and Preterm Birth in a Predominately Latina Cohort of Mothers

Open Access•Usah Dutson, Jue Lin et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2025

Latina mothers with moderate to late preterm infants had longer LTL in the immediate postpartum period compared to those with term infants. This association was stronger for mothers under the age of 35 years. LTL may serve as a biomarker to better understand the pathophysiology and risk of preterm birth and could inform targeted interventions for prevention and early detection. Future studies are needed to understand physiological changes in mate…

  • Estimating the effect of timing of earned income tax credit refunds on perinatal outcomes

    Open Access•Deborah Karasek, A Batra et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2023

This analysis offers a novel method to impute EITC eligibility using a probabilistic algorithm in a data set with richer sociodemographic information relative to the clinical and administrative data sets from which outcomes are drawn. These results could be used to determine the optimal intervention time point for future income supplementation policies. Future work should examine frequent income supplementation such as the minimum wage or basic i…

  • Interpregnancy Interval and Birth Outcomes

Open Access•Jayme L Congdon, Rebecca J Baer et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2022

This study demonstrates a dose response association between short IPI and adverse birth outcomes, with no increased risk beyond 12 months. Findings suggest that longer IPI recommendations may be overly proscriptive

  • Risk Factors for Dual Burden of Severe Maternal Morbidity and Preterm Birth by Insurance Type in California

Open Access•Alison M El Ayadi, Rebecca J Baer et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2022

Risk factors of dual burden differed by insurance type across sociodemographic and perinatal factors, suggesting that care quality may differ by insurance type. Attention to peripartum care access and care quality provided by insurance type is needed to improve maternal and neonatal health

  • Association of maternal prenatal selenium concentration and preterm birth

Open Access•Nagendra K Monangi, Huan Xu et al.•ARTICLE•BMJ Global Health•2021

BACKGROUND: Selenium (Se), an essential trace mineral, has been implicated in preterm birth (PTB). We aimed to determine the association of maternal Se concentrations during pregnancy with PTB risk and gestational duration in a large number of samples collected from diverse populations. METHODS: Gestational duration data and maternal plasma or serum samples of 9946 singleton live births were obtained from 17 geographically diverse study cohorts. …

  • Gestational age dating using newborn metabolic screening

    Open Access•Scott P Oltman, Elizabeth A Jasper et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Global Health•2021

Background Limited ultrasound capacity in low-resource settings makes correct gestational age (GA) dating difficult. Previous work demonstrated that newborn metabolic profiles can accurately determine gestational age, but this relationship has not been evaluated in low-income countries. The objective of this study was to validate and adapt a metabolic GA dating model developed using newborn blood spots for use in a low-resource setting in rural U…

  • Risk and Protective Factors for Preterm Birth Among Black Women in Oakland, California

Open Access•M R Mclemore, Rachel L Berkowitz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2020

  • Socioeconomic Status, Preeclampsia Risk and Gestational Length in Black and White Women

Open Access•Kharah M Ro, Christine Dunkel Schetter et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2019•Cited by: 6•References: 83

Compared to White women, Black women had increased preeclampsia risk. Higher SES attenuated risk for preeclampsia among White women, but not for Black women. Similarly, higher SES indirectly predicted longer gestational length via reduced preeclampsia risk among White women, but not for Black women. These findings are consistent with diminishing returns of higher SES for Black women with respect to preeclampsia

  • Previous Adverse Outcome of Term Pregnancy and Risk of Preterm Birth in Subsequent Pregnancy

Open Access•Rebecca J Baer, Vincenzo Berghella et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2018

  • Using Index of Concentration at the Extremes as Indicators of Structural Racism to Evaluate the Association with Preterm Birth and Infant Mortality—California, 2011–2012

    Open Access•Brittany D Chambers Butcher, Rebecca J Baer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2018•Cited by: 26•References: 8
