Factors and Interventions that Foster Success of Latinx Students in Public Community Colleges
Over 40% of U.S. Latinx students complete higher education in community colleges. These students’ retention, persistence, graduation, and transfer rates are notably lower than those of Latinx students in other higher education settings. To understand these differences, we systematically reviewed and content analyzed the peer-reviewed psychological research literature, finding 23 psychological correlates, organized into nine themes across five soc…
Gendered powerlessness in at-risk adolescent and young women
In the United States, youth aged 13–24 comprised approximately 21% of new HIV infections in 2017; 13% of these infections occurred among women, the majority of whom (86%) acquired HIV through heterosexual contact (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 2019a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (2019a). HIV and youth. Retrieved from https://www.cdc.gov/hiv/group/age/youth/index.html [Google Scholar]. HIV and youth. Retrieved from http…

Expert consensus on facilitating the coming-out process in sexual minority clients
This article presents the results of a Delphi study conducted to generate expert consensus about the best techniques for working with clients in the coming-out process. The initial expert interview phase (N = 19) generated a list of suggestions, including two therapist prerequisites, 11 suggestions for creating a welcoming environment, 15 areas of assessment, seven areas of psychoeducation, and 46 other specific techniques. During a second phase,…

Engaging Latino fathers into early head start
Youth health outcomes from the Connect-to-Protect coalitions to prevent adolescent HIV infections
We assessed the relationships among HIV-related social and behavioral outcomes resulting from an adolescent-focused HIV structural change initiative in eight urban sites operating Connect to Protect (C2P) coalitions. Over a 4-year period, annual cross-sectional panels of adolescents (N = 2,248) completed an audio-computer-assisted interview, providing data on satisfaction with their communities as adolescent-supportive environments, internalized …
The Youth Diversity Acceptance Scale
To facilitate rigorous research on community programs to promote positive intergroup relations among youth, 2 studies were conducted to establish the psychometric properties of the Youth Diversity Acceptance Scale (YoDA). In Study 1, a unifactorial structure was identified for the YoDA using data provided by 126 high school youth involved in a community program to improve intergroup relations. Moreover, hypothesized correlations between YoDA scor…

The development and evaluation of a natural helpers' training program to increase the engagement of urban, Latina/o families in parent-child interaction therapy
Dissemination of an evidence-based parenting program
Exploring the role of natural helpers in efforts to address disparities for children with conduct problems
Views on Sex and Sex Education Among Gang-Involved Latino Youth in the United States
Although gang-involved Latino youth in the United States are uniquely at risk of adverse consequences from sexual behavior, little research is available that can guide those who wish to develop interventions to reduce sexual risk among these youth. To facilitate the development of effective interventions, we identified cultural and contextual factors that influence sexual behavior and sex education among gang-involved Latino youth in one U.S. com…
Acting Bicultural Versus Feeling Bicultural
This study examines whether incorporating a multidimensional perspective to the study of the relation between cultural adaptation and academic attitudes among Latinas/os in the United States can clarify this relation. Hypotheses about the relation between cultural adaptation and academic attitudes were examined using data provided by U.S. Latina/o high school students. Findings suggest that enculturation and acculturation moderate each other’s ef…
Incorporating natural helpers to address service disparities for young children with conduct problems
U.S. Latinas/os’ Ethnic Identity
Ethnic identity is theoretically linked to the psychological health of U.S. Latinas/os and has played a preeminent role in the limited literature focused on this group. However, research does not uniformly confirm a positive relationship between ethnic identity and psychological health among U.S. Latinas/os. Emerging work suggests that inconsistencies in the existing literature might be better understood if ethnic identity conceptualizations acco…
Toward an Asset Orientation in the Study of U.S. Latina/o Youth
Despite their significant and growing demographic importance, U.S. Latina/o youth are rarely the focus of research and almost never studied from a perspective that reflects counseling psychologists’ emphases on social justice and the strengths of individuals. Such a perspective is likely to result in more effective approaches to the understanding and prevention of adverse outcomes and can expand the understanding of variables that have been tradi…
Service Accessibility for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Youth
Although Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and/or Questioning (LGBTQ) youth experience alarming rates of behavioral and social problems, service use among these youth is disproportionately low. It is likely that decreased service accessibility plays a causal role in service underutilization among LGBTQ youth. To expand the existing research on service accessibility issues in this population, a modified Delphi approach was used to gather …
