What can we say about substance use? Dominant discourses and narratives emergent from Australian media
Discourses are conceptualised as context-specific frameworks that constrain what can be presented as rational when considering psychoactive substances. Given the implications of this for Australian policy debate and development, research and health promotion, an integrative analysis explored the nature of the dominant discourses as they pertain to substance use. Newspaper articles spanning a 12-month period (April 2005–2006) were analysed with th…

The Purpose in Life Scale
The aim of the present research was to further investigate (a) the structure of the Purpose in Life test (PIL) using confirmatory factor analytic techniques,(b) the reliability of PIL scores, and (c) the validity of the PIL. Participants were 357 social drinkers (not in alcohol treatment) and 137 treatment drinkers (in alcohol treatment). With the exclusion of 3 items, a unidimensional measurement model for the PIL provided an adequate fit for so…
The Purpose in Life Scale
Disaster response
The assumption of an automatic link between disaster exposure and pathological outcomes is increasingly being questioned. Recognition of the possibility of positive reactions and growth outcomes in this context necessitates the development of alternative models and, in particular, the accommodation of the resilience construct in research and intervention agenda. Reviews possible vulnerability and resilience factors and adopts a risk management fr…

Incorporating indigenous and crosscultural issues into an undergraduate psychology course
There has been a clear expression of the need to incorporate Indigenous and crosscultural issues into psychology curricula and to develop models to guide the process. This paper outlines the process of developing an Indigenous and crosscultural psychology unit at Curtin University of Technology. A conceptual framework that includes foundational, professional, and socially responsive knowledge, which has guided the development and implementation o…
Migrant Ethnic Identity and Psychological Distress
Although a considerable amount of research has addressed aspects of refugee and migrant adjustment to their new country of residence, little attention has been given to the causal impact of migrant ethnic identity on the adjustment process. To assess this issue, a model of migrant psychological distress was developed in which ethnic identity was predicted to influence personal coping resources (i.e., self-esteem, self-mastery, interpersonal trust…
Is it fitting? Comments on the Lisrel analysis by Stoner & Arora of variables affecting the psychological health of strikers
The analysis of the psychological health of strikers presented by Stoner & Arora (1987) presents several problems. The LISREL model that they apparently use is not identified, nor does it fit the publishing data. A reanalysis of the data with an identified model that approximates the authors' model produced parameter estimates which lead to a very different understanding of relationships among the variables. Further analyses showed the data to be…
Conceptual, computational and attitudinal correlates of student performance in introductory statistics
One hundred and twenty-one social science students enrolled in an introductory statistics course were administered four paper and pencil measures which were chosen as operational indices of conceptual, computational and attitudinal skill areas. Multiple regression analyses showed that measures of self-confidence, deduction and numeracy accounted for 49.4% of the variance of final statistics grade (p < .001). The assessment and role of these varia…
The role of talkback radio
The suitability of talkback radio as a change agent in community psychology is outlined. Empirical research was undertaken to examine one aspect of talkback radio—assistance with listeners' problems. A broader role for this medium in community mental health is proposed.
