  • Movement of Chinese Music Student Teachers Through Fuller and Bown Stages of Concern: A Comparison of Survey Ratings and Free Response

    Open Access•Jing Liu, Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2024•References: 7

Student teaching is a critical element in music teacher preparation. Fuller and Bown’s three-stage model of teacher concerns development has been widely utilized in the United States, but little is known about the development of concerns of Chinese preservice music teachers. Therefore, the purpose of this mixed-method study was to investigate Chinese student teachers’ ( N = 65) concerns and shift-of-concern patterns before and after student teach…

  • It’s about time: An examination of the importance of timing on positivity of preservice music educators’ teaching reflections

    Open Access•Janice N Killian, Jacqueline C Henninger et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2023

“We do not learn from experience. . .we learn from reflecting on experience” (Dewey, 1933). Building on the theoretical frameworks of Dewey and Schön involving reflective practice, we expanded existent reflective research by examining timing of preservice music educators’ self-reflections after peer teaching. We examined reflection timing (immediately after peer teaching or after viewing video of that same teaching), effect of differing prompts i…

  • Music Student Teachers: Pre–Student Teaching Concerns and Post–Student Teaching Perceptions Over a 5-Year Period

Open Access•Janice N Killian, Keith Dye et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In this descriptive study, we examined self-reported concerns of 159 music student teachers pre– and post–student teaching, over a period of 5 years. Resulting comments ( N = 867) were analyzed on the basis of (a) stages of teacher concern (focus on self, subject matter [music and teaching], and students) modeled after Fuller and Bown and (b) emerging categories of concern compared with those identified by Madsen and Kaiser. Stages of concern wer…

  • A Descriptive Study of Vocal Maturation Among Male Adolescent Vocalists and Instrumentalists

    Open Access•Janice N Killian, John B Wayman•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This descriptive study was designed to examine middle school adolescent boys’ singing voices ( N = 104) comprising volunteers enrolled in band ( n = 72) or choir ( n = 32). The authors sought to confirm possible earlier voice change, to compare vocal characteristics among frequent (choir) and infrequent (band) singers, and to determine use of falsetto during each voice stage. To assess falsetto, the authors had participants view and then imitate …

  • Perception of Choral Blend Among Choral, Instrumental, and Nonmusic Majors Using the Continuous Response Digital Interface

    Open Access•Janice N Killian, Lynn Basinger•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2007•References: 1

The concept of choral blend is often adjudicated but seldom researched. Voice matching to achieve choral blend (placing specific voices next to one another to achieve a blended sound within a section) is frequently recommended. The authors asked participants ( N = 55) comprised of vocal, instrumental, and nonmusic majors to move a continuous response digital interface dial to indicate judgment of blend quality while listening to voice-matched cho…

  • A Comparison of Successful and Unsuccessful Strategies in Individual Sight-Singing Preparation and Performance

Janice N Killian, Michele L Henry•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2005

  • A Description of Vocal Maturation among Fifth- and Sixth-Grade Boys

    Open Access•Janice N Killian, Janice Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1999•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The present study was designed to explore the idea that boys' voices may be changing earlier than indicated in previous research. Singing and speaking voices of fifth-grade (h = 56) and sixth-grade (h = 43) boys were categorized and compared with the Cooksey changing voice stages. Data consisted of grade in school, age in years, highest and lowest sung pitches, overall singing range, speaking pitches, and voice stage categorization. Results indic…

  • Perceptions of the Voice-Change Process: Male Adult versus Adolescent Musicians and Nonmusicians

    Open Access•Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 1

To examine the changing-voice process, 141 males were interviewed regarding their voice change. Subjects included changing-voice boys (both singers and nonsingers) and men (both singers and nonsingers during time of voice change). Audiotaped interviews were scripted and verbal content analyzed. Results included the following: Boys remembered significantly more about their voice changes than did men. Singers remembered more than nonsingers. Signif…

  • Definitions of “Knowing”: Comparison of Verbal Report versus Performance of Children's Songs

    Open Access•Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1996•Cited by: 6•References: 1

This study explored variations in the definition of “knowing” by comparing third-graders' (n = 31) and adults' (n = 31) verbal recognition of song titles with their ability to sing the same songs. Data consisted of number of song titles recognized and number of songs actually sung, as well as subjects' pitch accuracy, word accuracy, and starting pitches. Results indicated a moderate positive correlation between titles circled and songs sung. Adul…

  • The Relationship Between Sightsinging Accuracy and Error Detection in Junior High Singers

    Open Access•Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1991•Cited by: 7•References: 6

The purpose of this study was to compare junior high students' sightsinging accuracy with their ability to perceive errors in recorded examples. Junior high choir students ( N − 75) individually taped themselves while sightsinging counterbalanced examples of notation and solfege syllables. Subsequently, an error-detection task was designed based on the most common student errors and using the same examples. Students listened to the sung examples,…

  • Effect of Model Characteristics on Musical Preference of Junior High Students

    Open Access•Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1990•Cited by: 6•References: 5

In an effort to compare the effect of modeling on the development of musical preference, the author of this study compared subject race and sex with preferred-performer race and sex, examined subject-preferred solos given solo models of differing race and sex, and determined the relationship between performer preference and solo choices. Junior high males ( n = 67) and females ( n = 112), composed of blacks ( n = 110), whites ( n = 45), and Hispa…

  • Operant Preference for Vocal Balance in Four-Voice Chorales

    Open Access•Janice N Killian•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•1985•Cited by: 3

The investigation was designed to determine preference for balance in four-voice chorales. Choral conductors ( n = 35) and high school choral students ( n = 52) verbally stated their balance preference and then listened individually to SATB chorale excerpts. Subjects were instructed to manipulate the loudness controls of a four-channel tape recorder as an operant measure of preferred balance. The tape recorder allowed regulation of the loudness o…
