  • A Case Study of the Implementation of Non-linear Assessment Protocols for Pre-service Music Teachers

Open Access•Jeffrey Ward, Phillip G Payne et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Music…•2025

Grounded in previous research regarding admission and graduation standards of music education undergraduate candidates, we created a framework to assess student readiness to enter the music education profession across multiple points of inquiry. To determine the efficacy of the protocols, we conducted a case study to pilot implementation of the protocols with two university music education programs in the United States. • The Development of a String Sight-Reading Pitch Skill Hierarchy

    Open Access•Michael L Alexander, Michele L Henry•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 9

This study was designed to determine a pitch skill hierarchy for string sight-reading, to determine the effects of key on string sight-reading achievement, and to determine the validity of a tonal pattern system as a measurement of melodic sight-reading skill for string players. High school string students ( n = 94) obtained a mean score of 27.28 out of 31 on a modified version of the Vocal Sight-Reading Inventory. Success rates ranging from .99 …

In this study, the author sought to determine the relationship between pitch and rhythm tasks occurring concurrently. High school singers ( N = 252) sang melodies with varying combinations of pitch and rhythm difficulty. Resul…

    Open Access•Michele L Henry•ARTICLE•Journal of Research in Music…•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 2

The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of sight-singing instruction using specific pitch skills emphasizing scale degree and harmonic function. Fifteen pitch skills encompassing scalar, cadential, and chordal tasks were included in the study. Over a 12-week period, two randomly assigned groups of novice high school singers received instruction. Group A (n = 41) received instruction with new melodies written specifically to i…
