Understanding the Disaster Experience of Older Adults by Gender
We examine the experiences of older adult survivors of the August 2007 "Southern earthquake" in Peru within the cultural context of gender roles and family relationships. The data include 24 semistructured videotaped interviews conducted in Pisco in December 2007 with survivors of the earthquake aged 60-90. This article examines disparities in health and healthcare for Latina women. It draws on existing literature and descriptive data from a study with Latinas. Mortality rates, leading causes of death, and reproductive health are well-documented. Acculturation and Depression among Puerto Ricans in the Mainland
The relationship between acculturation and depression in a sample of 1,510 Puerto Ricans residing in the U.S. was examined. Acculturation was measured by assessing subjects' spoken, preferred, read, and written language. Depression was evaluated by the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale. The scale yielded a three-factor structure for depression that included depressive affect/somatic, interpersonal, and positive affect dimensions…
Lifetime Abuse and Mental Health Distress Among English-Speaking Latinas
Domestic violence has adverse consequences on the mental health of abused women, including Latinas, who face stressors that are associated with oppression, resettlement, and minority status, which increase their risk of abuse and its psychological distress.
