Improving Behavioral Health in Young People
Behavioral health problems in young people are often addressed through costly and ineffective treatment, rehabilitation, and control strategies aimed at helping children and adolescents after problems are identified. Evidence indicates that many behavioral health problems can be prevented before they occur, thereby saving significant individual, economic, and social costs. Although policy, practice, and research in reducing behavioral health prob…

Restorative Interventions and School Discipline Sanctions in a Large Urban School District
A large urban district ( N = 90,546 students, n = 180 schools) implemented restorative interventions as a response to school discipline incidents. Findings from multilevel modeling of student discipline records ( n = 9,921) revealed that youth from groups that tend to be overrepresented in suspensions and expulsions (e.g., Black, Latino, and Native American youth; boys; and students in special education) had similar, if not greater, rates of part…
Differences in Experiences of Racial and Ethnic Microaggression among Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Black, and White Young Adults
Racial and ethnic discrimination is a significant risk factor for health and mental health problems among non-White children, adolescents, and adults. Recent evidence suggests that a form of discrimination known as microaggression, characterized by subtle and often unintentional acts of discriminatory behavior, is associated with detrimental effects on the psychological and emotional wellbeing of non-White individuals. We examined differences in …

The Revised 28-Item Racial and Ethnic Microaggressions Scale (R28Rems)
Racial and ethnic discrimination has adverse effects on the health and mental health outcomes of people of color. Evidence indicates that modern discriminatory behavior is often a product of brief, commonplace, and often subtle acts that convey derogatory messages to people of color, known as racial and ethnic microaggressions. Accurately measuring microaggression is essential to understanding and preventing behaviors that are consistent with thi…
Development and Validation of a Positive Youth Development Measure
Objective: Positive Youth Development (PYD) is a resilience-based framework that accentuates positive traits in youth. PYD constructs are characteristics that are hypothesized to promote healthy development. However, measures to assess PYD constructs are lacking. Methods: An instrument was created to assess PYD. One hundred and forty youth between the age of 7 and 18 ( M = 11.6) completed the measure over five time points. Data were then analyzed…

Transitions between subclasses of bullying and victimization when entering middle school
We examined the effects of depressive symptoms, antisocial attitudes, and perspective-taking empathy on patterns of bullying and victimization during the transition from late elementary (4th grade to 5th grade) to middle school (6th grade) among 1,077 students who participated in the Youth Matters (YM) bullying prevention trial. Latent transition analysis was used to establish classes of bullying, victimization, bully-victimization, and uninvolve…
Effects of the Youth Matters Prevention Program on Patterns of Bullying and Victimization in Elementary and Middle School
The authors examined the effects of a prevention program, Youth Matters (YM), on patterns of bullying and victimization among a sample of 876 public school students in grades 4, 5, and 6. Latent class analysis was used to establish classes of bullying, victimization, bully-victimization, and uninvolved students. Prevalence rates and transition patterns associated with bullying and victimization were assessed at four time points. Participants in t…
Science, Social Work, and Intervention Research
Intervention research is an important, yet often neglected, focus of social work scholars and investigators. The purpose of this article is to review significant milestones and recent advances in intervention research. Methodological and analytical developments in intervention research are discussed in the context of science and social work. Critical Time Intervention, a psychosocial approach to preventing homelessness and improving mental health…
Patterns of Aggressive Behavior and Peer Victimization from Childhood to Early Adolescence
Violence in Context
This book offers a critical appraisal of research and theory focused on violence in youth, families, and communities. Chapters examine the ways in which violence is defined and understood; how risk and protective factors promote and inhibit violence in families and in communities; and how violence and related behaviors differ by gender, race, and ethnicity. Work reviewed throughout the book examines overlapping forms of violence, the impact of vi…
Strong-Arm Bullying Prior to Incarceration Among a Sample of Young Offenders
Most studies of bullying behavior have been conducted with general populations during childhood and early adolescence. Although incarcerated youth are at increased risk for bullying others, incarcerated youth in the United States have rarely been studied regarding their bullying behavior prior to incarceration. Understanding the psychological and antisocial correlates of strong-arm bullying prior to incarceration may highlight risk factors that, …
Preventing Childhood Bullying
Twelve-month follow-up outcomes from a group-randomized trial (GRT) of a classroom curriculum aimed at preventing bullying and victimization among elementary students in the Denver, Colorado, public school system are presented. Twenty-eight elementary schools were randomly assigned to receive selected modules of Youth Matters (YM), a skills-training curriculum that targets bullying and victimization, or to a no-treatment control group. Revisioning Social Work Clinical Education
An evidence-based practice (EBP) movement is underway in social work that promises to change the very nature and methods of clinical education and practice. Growing demands for accountability, increasingly sophisticated clients, heightened threats of malpractice liability, and a host of additional factors arising within and external to the profession have contributed to the growth of EBP. This review examines indices of the growing influence of E…

Youth Crime, Public Policy, and Practice in the Juvenile Justice System
Historically, juvenile justice policy has oscillated between rehabilitative and punitive approaches to managing young offenders. Policy and practice in the 1970s and 1980s emphasized individual treatment for young offenders in nonsecure, community-based programs. An increase in violent youth crime during the past decade has renewed interest in punishing delinquent youths. Cyclic fluctuations in juvenile justice policy and their relationship to po…

Delinquency and Drug Abuse
Recent studies have revealed common risk factors for adolescent drug abuse and delinquency. This evidence suggests that efforts to prevent adolescent substance abuse and chronic serious delinquency should target the same factors. The same interventions may decrease the risk of both of these forms of adolescent antisocial behavior. Further, given the high rates of drug use among delinquents, drug-abuse intervention and treatment programs are clear…

Advances and Challenges in Preventing Childhood and Adolescent Problem Behavior
Prevention has recently been heralded as an effective way to reduce the adverse effects associated with childhood and adolescent problem behavior. Bolstered by new evidence indicating that empirically based curricula can prevent or delay the onset of problems such as drug use or delinquency, many communities have strengthened their commitment to providing prevention programs in local neighborhoods and schools (Gottfredson & Wilson, 2003).
