Introduction
There is something at first sight misplaced and yet intriguing about a forum on ‘Iberian Asia’ in a journal called Colonial Latin American Review [CLAR]. The possibility itself stems from the fact
Trent'anni di storiografia sull'Inquisizione portoghese. Quesiti aperti, reticenze, prospettive di ricerca (1978-2008)
Material Culture and Early Modern Archivality
This introductory article provides a theoretical foundation for the multi-authored conversation developed in the special issue Archives & Objects . It argues for a greater attention to the role of non-textual artifacts in the practice of record-keeping throughout the early modern world and more generally for a mutually beneficial dialogue between the material and archival “turns” in historical studies. The article begins with a discussion of the …
The seasonality of empire
Global historians have contributed greatly to reconfiguring our understanding of the early modern world. An emphasis has broadly emerged in current scholarship on the long-distance circulation of people and goods and cross-cultural exchange of knowledge with overseas empires usually described as major vectors of global interaction. This article corrects and complicates such an interpretation by calling attention to the periodic interruption of th…
Portuguese Mercenary Networks in Seventeenth-Century India
Thousands of runaways left the Portuguese empire during the early modern period, but very little is known about the lived experience of this diverse group of individuals after they fled. This article questions the framework of analysis that reduces such a complex social phenomenon to the overarching category of “informal empire,” while testing the hypothesis that the issue of the archive lies at the core of the practice of global microhistory. A …

Iberian Theories of Empire in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries
Starting from the Iberian reaction to Machiavelli's ideas about religion and war, this article compares and connects Spanish and Portuguese theories of empire in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Writings by Francisco de Vitoria, Martín de Azpilcueta, and Juan de Solórzano Pereira, as well as by less well-known thinkers, are used to trace the main legal and theological debates over empire that developed across the Iberian world. It is argu…

Jesuit Missions between the Papacy and the Iberian Crowns
This chapter reconstructs the political constraints on the Jesuits who were circulating across Africa, America, and Asia from the mid-sixteenth through the twentieth century. The first missionaries acted under the royal patronages that the papacy had granted the crowns of Portugal and Spain over their oceanic empires. This legal and institutional framework, which had a deep influence on the Jesuit missions, was increasingly challenged by the papa…
Killing Images
The article builds on a succession of visually disturbing events that occurred in Goa—the capital city of Portuguese India—during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. From the early years of the Portuguese conquest (1510), Goa went through a redefinition of its urban space, which implied the appropriation and re-semantization of buildings and other key sites of the old Muslim city. This process included the spread of images and symbols relate…
Blackness and Heathenism. Color, Theology, and Race in the Portuguese World, c. 1450-1600
The coexistence of a process of hierarchy and discrimination among human groups alongside dynamics of cultural and social hybridization in the Portuguese world in the early modern age has led to an intense historiographical debate. This article aims to contribute to extending our perspectives, focusing on the circulation of two global categories of classification: negro (Black) and gentio (Heathen) between the mid-fifteenth and late-sixteenth cen…
Too Much to Rule
In the past two decades, empires have increasingly attracted the attention of historians of the early modern period to the detriment of the traditional focus on states as the default political unit of analysis. The emergence of global history is not alien to this turn. This article maintains that our understanding of configurations of the early modern political map would only benefit from detaching the history of the state from its European traje…
Renaissance Italy meets South Asia. Florentines and Venetians in a Cosmopolitan World
We tend to view the Renaissance as a period of rediscovery and reshaping of the concept of the cosmopolitan, which originated in classical antiquity. Recent historiography has suggested that this reinterpretation did not go beyond the limits of Eurocentrism. Other scholars have stressed that early modern South Asia was a cosmopolitan world where a multiplicity of languages, customs and creeds flourished together with a respect for the religious, …
The Mogor as Venomous Hydra
The present article seeks to discuss the prevailing ideas and practices of frontier among the Mughals. Concurrently, it considers the ways in which the Portuguese Asian Empire perceived this expanding imperial space. The Mughal emperors engaged in a strong universalistic discourse, which ultimately pointed towards the idea of an infinite Timurid India. To be sure, the Portuguese were hit by this imperial rhetoric, but they rested on intriguing me…
Is This Love? Same-Sex Marriages in Renaissance Rome
In 1578, a same-sex community that gathered in a church, performing marriages between men, was discovered in Rome. Documentary evidence now verifies this story, reported by many sources, including a passage of Michel de Montaigne's Travel Journal, but which was for a long time denied by scholars. While briefly reconstructing this affair, this article explores the complex emotional regime surrounding the episode. In particular, it argues that thos…
Trading with the Muslim World
This chapter examines the commercial relations that the early modern Portuguese Empire entertained with the Muslim world. In principle, canon law forbade all Catholic countries and merchants from selling weapons, iron, wood, and other potential armaments to Muslims and other non-Christians. While promoting commerce and overseas expansion, Portuguese royal legislation abided by these canon law prohibitions. But how could religious proscriptions co…

Conscience and Empire
This article presents the first reconstruction of the relationship between conscience and empire in the Portuguese World between 1500 and 1650. It shows to what extent the foundation of the Mesa da Consciência ("Board of Conscience"), a royal council of theologians devoted to issues like war, commerce, conversion, and slavery, shaped the imperial ideology. In this context, "conscience" emerged as a keyword in the political vocabulary, reflecting …

Toward a History of the Portuguese Inquisition Trends in Modern Historiography (1974-2009)
The Portuguese Inquisition’s general history has yet to be written. This article explores the reason of such a surprising dearth, in a close comparison with the Italian and Spanish cases. A wide range of works is here discussed in order to promote a perspective from which the first critical synthesis on the Portuguese Inquisition could come to light. Firstly, classic historiography will be analyzed up to the ‘Carnation Revolution’ (1974). Since t…
