Perceived discrimination and Asian cultural values are associated with beliefs about psychological services among Chinese international students
Predictors of quality of life of Portuguese Americans
Utilising the Multicultural Assessment-Intervention Process (MAIP) framework, the present study examined the effects of acculturation, ethnic identity, and religiosity on Portuguese Americans’ perceptions of their quality of life. Several culturally-sensitive variables were used to predict quality of life attitudes among a convenience sample of 305 Portuguese American adults. A structural model with quality of life as the outcome variable, Portug…
Sustainable Behavior, Perceived Globalization Impact, World-Mindedness, Identity, and Perceived Risk in College Samples from the United States, China, and Taiwan
This study identified psychological predictors of environmentally sustainable behavior in college student samples from the United States (N =442), China (N =516), and Taiwan (N =164) based on the literature and informed by an extension of Sherif's superordinate goal theory, which stipulates that perceived generalized threat is associated with increased community solidarity, promotes cooperative behavior, and fosters a stronger sense of belonging …
Predictors of self-perceived cultural competence among children’s mental health providers
Based on empirical research and predictions from the Multicultural Assessment-Intervention Process model, the racial attitudes, ethnic identity, and acculturation of a national sample of 371 child mental health service providers were assessed as possible predictors of practitioner self-perceived cultural competence. It was hypothesized that ethnic identity and racial attitudes would each directly affect self-perceived cultural competence and that…
An analysis of the Multicultural Assessment Intervention Process model
Multiple regression models linking client counselor preferences, client-provider ethnic/racial match and provider self-perceived cultural competence to clinical outcome was developed with samples of African American, Latino American and White American adult outpatient community mental health clients (n=1153). The models tested hypothesized relationships of cultural factors predicted by the Multicultural Assessment Intervention Process model. Meas…
Armenian Ethnic Orientation Questionnaire-Revised
Armenian Ethnic Orientation Questionnaire–Revised
The purpose of this study was to report the development of a shorter revised version of the 57-item Armenian Ethnic Orientation Questionnaire. Data from two different independently conducted studies were presented. One of the studies used a convenient sample from Pasadena, California (n = 155) composed of Armenian adolescents (48% girls, 52% boys; with a mean age of 15.6 yr., SD = 1.2) who attended public schools. The second study used a convenie…
Cultural Competency Revised
The authors describe the development of the California Brief Multicultural Competence Scale (CBMCS). The 21 -item CBMCS was derived from principal component analysis, item content validated by a panel of experts, and confirmatory factor analyses. Several studies provided internal consistency, subscale intercorrelations, criterion-related validation, and assessment of possible social desirability contamination
Effects of Latino Acculturation and Ethnic Identity on Mental Health Outcomes
The relationships among client-therapist ethnic match, client age group, client acculturation, ethnic identity, and generation level and their effect on client global assessment of function (GAF), total mental health visits, and costs were examined with a sample of 204 Latino adult and child community mental health clients. Acculturation was measured using the Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans-II (ARSMA-II), and the Multigroup Ethn…
Ethnic match and client ethnicity effects on global assessment and visitation
The effects of client-therapist ethnic match and client ethnicity on therapist-evaluated Global Assessment of Function (GAF) and visitation were investigated. The sample consisted of several thousand outpatient clients of a Southern California community mental health center. Findings indicated that unadjusted GAF-intake and GAF-termination scores were higher for ethnically matched Latino and Asian Americans but not for African and White Americans…
Affective Bicultural and Global-Human Identity Scales for Mexican-American Adolescents
Scales were developed to measure affective aspects of Latino, American, and global-human identities among first- and second-generation Mexican-American adolescents. Participants were 84 boys and 93 girls from the Los Angeles high schools. 60 were born in Mexico, and 117 were born in the United States and had at least one parent born in Mexico. The affective Latino and American measures were independent and predictably related to a behaviorally or…
The Cross-Cultural World-Mindedness Scale and Political Party Affiliation
Supporters of the Democratic, Republican, and neither parties from Southern California ( n = 178) and Texas ( n = 136) were administered the Cross-cultural World-mindedness scale. The former sample scored higher than the latter. Supporters of the different parties did not score differently within the Texas sample; however, supporters of the Republican party in the Southern California sample scored lower than the other two groups who were not diff…
Family Involvement and Outcome in Treatment of Alcoholism
The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of spouses' (or significant others') involvement in the treatment of alcoholism. Altogether 80 adult patients who had been treated for alcoholism participated. There were three groups who varied in involvement: Group I whose spouses attended 3 or fewer group therapy sessions per week, Group II whose spouses attended 4 or more sessions per week, and Group III whose spouses were treated as inpati…
Social Anxiety, Public Self-Consciousness, and Variability of Behavior
A number of researchers have suggested that individuals vary in how they present themselves across time and situations ( 4 ) and that social anxiety and public selfconsciousness are possible predictors of such variability (1, 2 ) . Lennox ( 2 ) obtained only a moderate correlation between social anxiety and cross-situational variability and no correlation between public self-consciousness and variability of behavior, however, social anxiety and p…
Reported Intimacy and Dominance Gestures by Women in a Corporate Setting
The study tested the relationship of reported intimacy and dominance gestures by women in a corporate setting. The effect of age and marital status was also examined. The reported frequencies of the two types of gestures were uncorrelated ( r = .28). However, dominance was reported more frequently ( M = 9.85, SD = 1.8) than sexual intimacy ( M = 5.76, SD = 3.1). The 34 younger women reported more dominance and less sexual intimacy than the 48 old…
Relation of Two Cultural Identities of Armenian-Americans
The gap between the two cultural identities of 37 female and 43 male Armenian-American teen-agers attending Armenian schools was studied. The effects of ethnic involvement and residency status (native-born and recent immigrant) were examined. The absolute difference between the Armenian and American identity scores defined the gap between the two cultural identities. It was hypothesized that more ethnic involvement and recent immigrant status wou…
