    Open Access•Ute Lotz-Heumann•ARTICLE•Memoria y Civilización•2018•Cited by: 4

Since the 1980s the concept of "confessionalization" has been one of the leading interpretive categories in the historiography on early modern Germany. This article will, firstly, explain the paradigm of confessionalization as it was developed by Wolfgang Reinhard and Heinz Schilling in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Ute Lotz-Heumann, Ulinka Rublack•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the Protestant…•2016

This chapter provides an overview of the historiography on the natural and supernatural in early modern Europe with a particular emphasis on Protestantism. It considers the ways in which this subject is closely intertwined with other major research areas in early modern historiography, especially the subject of popular and elite religion and the question of Protestantism and desacralization/secularization. This article has a twofold aim: first, to explain the concept of confessionalization that has been developed in recent decades in German historiography as an interpretive tool for the period and to review the main lines of its critique, which raise important questions for the discussion of “confessionalization and literature”; and second, to explore the connections between confessionalization and literature as well as the applicability of the con…

  • The Origins of Sectarianism in Early Modern Ireland

    Open Access•Ute Lotz-Heumann, Tadhg Ó hAnnracháin et al.•BOOK•Origins of Sectarianism in Early…•2005

Ireland is riven by sectarian hatred. This simple assumption provides a powerful explanation for the bitterness and violence which has so dominated Irish history. Most notably, the troubles in Northern Ireland have provided fertile ground for scholars from all disciplines to argue about and explore ways in which religious division fueled the descent into hostility and disorder. In much of this literature, however, sectarianism is seen as, somehow…
