  • Functional somatic symptoms

    Type, distribution, and comorbidity of functional somatic symptoms were examined in four community samples, three Hispanic and one non-Hispanic white. Important intergroup and intragroup differences between Hispanic and non-Hispanic white groups were identified. Of the four groups, Puerto Rican respondents reported the highest level of somatic symptoms; this finding was apparently independent of sociodemographic factors

    Violence runs in families, as does lithium-responsiveness. These conditions, which may be concurrent, must be sought in families of violent manic-depressive youngsters. An illustrative case history is presented, in which the child is the identified patient--not only psychologically, but pharmacologically as well--who brings his family, and specifically his father, into much needed treatment

    The impact of stress, due to migration and poverty, on the family structure of the low-income Puerto Rican family is discussed. The ecostructural family therapy approach is suggested as an appropriate therapeutic modality with this high-risk group.
