The gardener. Post-anthropocentric figures and ecological interdependence in social sciences
An examination of social figures reveals that ecological relationships remain largely overlooked in sociological theorizing. This article introduces the gardener as an ecological social figure that brings nature, materiality, and social relations into an analytical frame. Drawing on Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Zygmunt Bauman, Friedrich Hayek, Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, and Donna Haraway, I trace how the gardener figures different ways of organizing human—…
Affinity and the affective turn in understanding political cohesion
This article explores the diverse phenomena of contemporary political collectives, ranging from traditional labour unions and parties to right-wing movements and fluid formations like Occupy Wall Street and Fridays for Future, through the lens of political cohesion. I argue that current debates are characterized by a conceptual divide: while classical theories of solidarity emphasize cognitive processes, shared values and stable identities, the r…
Emotions as Affect Modulations: A Vitalist Reading after Deleuze, Simondon, and Massumi
Vitalist affect theories, following Deleuze and Massumi, gain significance through their departure from emotion theories. They conceptualize affect as a positive and productive alternative to a repressive notion of emotion. This is one reason why few attempts have been made to connect vitalist affect theories with theories of emotion. I address this gap by developing a vitalist theory of emotion in dialogue with emotion theories following Simmel.…

The Autonomy of the Social. Modulatory Sociality in Vitalist Theories
The social sphere has gotten a bad rap in contemporary affect theory, especially in the vitalist approaches following Gilles Deleuze: the social is largely seen as merely limiting the vital potentials of affect. In contrast, I develop a different understanding of the social in vitalist approaches, in which I draw on Deleuze and elaborate on some of his less frequently discussed concepts. This alternative understanding builds on the mutually enabl…
Antimoderne Narrative in vitalistischen Affekttheorien
Currently, many authors in public and academic discourse speak of an increasing „social divide“ that threatens social cohesion. There has been a broad discussion on social cohesion in social sciences ever since: Different conceptions could be ideally classified in a scheme with a more rational (Weber, Parsons) and a more emotional pole (Durkheim, Tönnies). I explore this tension by following an affective turn in conceptions of social cohesion. Th…

On right-wing movements, spheres, and resonances: An interview with Ben Anderson and Rainer Mühlhoff
This interview began in Hamburg and Berlin and continued virtually, as an active email exchange, between November 2017 and April 2018. Our conversation was sparked by the recent and ongoing turn to the right in global politics. It departs from exploring ‘affective modes of inquiry’, which our interview partners have applied in recent articles. We then move on to discuss the events of Brexit in the UK and the return of the far right to German Parl…
