El poder del archivo: The Power of the Archive
Human Rights and the Status of Children as Victims in the Late Cold War
This article argues that in the late 1970s the human rights movement recognised children as subjects in their own right, giving them their own voice. The author questions the claims that until recently the dominant view of victims and their suffering was adult-centric and that human rights and humanitarianism were two unrelated paradigms. In studying this process, the author offers a historiographical contribution that centres on the value of chi…
Childhood, Love and Politics: The Montonero 'Nursery' in Cuba during the Cold War
This article examines the conditions that led the Argentine armed group Montoneros to establish a nursery in Cuba, in 1979, to care for the children of exiled members who had decided to return to the country to fight against a dictatorial regime characterised by the crime of enforced disappearance and supported by continental and global alliances. The analysis focuses on the dilemmas children posed for militants and the organisation and how those…

Children of the Revolution
This interview of Gregory Randall offers a lens onto a transnational life experience, including that of international refugees in Cuba. Randall was born in New York in 1960. He spent his early childhood in Mexico and arrived in Cuba in 1970, where he remained until the 1980s. In this interview, Randall reflects on Cuban policies toward women, homosexuality, and youth. He also analyzes his own family's experience, characterized by a strong commitm…
Revolutionary Positions
This essay opens new perspectives on the Cuban Revolution by considering its global impact through the lens of gender and sexuality. This framework provides important new insights into the rise of the New Left and the anticommunist Right by centering ideas of gender, sexuality, and the family. Locating the Cuban Revolution alongside other contemporary struggles against racism and imperialism, the essay argues that gender and sexuality were crucia…

Masculinidades, clase social y lucha política (Argentina, 1970)

H e d i e d thinking I was a traitor," former Montonera guerrilla Ana Testa says as she looks into the camera. She had given her account of how she had been tortured, but now she was remembering a different kind of pain. After she was liberated from a clandestine detention center, her partner, Juan Silva-who would later be "disappeared"-could have gone to her, but he refused. 1This is not a mere anecdote. In it are enmeshed the views on love, activi…
Mafalda: Middle Class, Everyday Life, and Politics in Argentina, 1964-1973
In this article I reconstruct the history of Mafalda, the famous comic strip by the Argentine cartoonist Quino that was read, discussed, and viewed as an emblematic representation of Argentina's middle class. With the aim of contributing to discussions on the interpretation of the middle class in Argentina and Latin America, I examine the emergence, circulation, and sociopolitical significance of the comic from its first strips in 1964 until Quin…
Argentine Mothers and Fathers and the New Psychological Paradigm of Child-Rearing (1958-1973)
This article examines how mothers and fathers in Argentina dealt with the shift in child-rearing paradigm that occurred in the 1960s, drawing on the views of the parents themselves. The analysis is based on 1,100 questions posed by audiences in a series of conferences delivered by two renowned experts in the field, who championed the new parenting paradigm that advocated the psychologization of childcare. It also makes use of other sources, inclu…
La emergencia de un nuevo modelo de paternidad en Argentina (1950-1975) / The Emergence of a New Model of Fatherhood in Argentina (1950-1975)

This article analyses the conditions of vulnerability that affected people who lived outside the ideal family norms, especially regarding illegitimacy, in Argentina in the mid-twentieth century. This involved many families: in 1940 one out of three newborns was classified as “illegitimate”. The analysis shows that illegitimate birth was a juridical condition that implied significant loss of rights. It was aggravated by social, economic and cultur…
