  • Breastfeeding Versus Formula-Feeding and Girls’ Pubertal Development

Open Access•Aarti Kale, Julianna Deardorff et al.•ARTICLE•Maternal and Child Health Journal•2014

  • Local food environments are associated with girls’ energy, sugar-sweetened beverage and snack-food intakes

    Open Access•Andrea L Deierlein, Maida P Galvez et al.•ARTICLE•Public Health Nutrition•2014

Objective To describe availability and frequency of use of local snack-food outlets and determine whether reported use of these outlets was associated with dietary intakes. Design Data were cross-sectional. Availability and frequency of use of three types of local snack-food outlets were reported. Daily dietary intakes were based on the average of up to four 24 h dietary recalls. Multivariable linear regression models estimated average daily inta…

  • Correspondence Between Gonadal Steroid Hormone Concentrations and Secondary Sexual Characteristics Assessed by Clinicians, Adolescents, and Parents

Open Access•Bin Huang, Jennifer Hillman et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2012•References: 1

Adolescent sexual maturation is staged using Tanner criteria assessed by clinicians, parents, or adolescents. The physiology of sexual maturation is driven by gonadal hormones. We investigate Tanner stage progression as a function of increasing gonadal hormone concentration and compare performances of different raters. Fifty-six boys (mean age, 12.7±1.3 years) and 52 girls (mean age, 12.0±1.6 years) were seen at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Estrad…

  • Puberty and Its Measurement

    Open Access•Lorah D Dorn, Frank M Biro•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2011•Cited by: 23•References: 6

Since the early 1980s, the focus on the importance of puberty to adolescent development has continued with variability in the methodology selected to measure puberty. To capture the relevant and important issues regarding the measurement of puberty in the last decade, this paper will address (1) the neuroendocrine aspects of puberty and its components, as well as the timing of puberty and its tempo; (2) why puberty is measured, including the rele…

  • Childhood obesity and adult morbidities

    Open Access•Frank M Biro, Michelle Wien•ARTICLE•American Journal of Clinical…•2010

  • Defining the Boundaries of Early Adolescence

Lorah D Dorn, Ronald E Dahl et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Developmental Science•2006

This article addresses pragmatic issues regarding the assessment of puberty in research on adolescent health and development. Because pubertal processes have a major effect on physical, psychological, and social development, we posit that the assessment of pubertal status is at least as important as the specification of age for characterizing adolescent participants in research studies. Yet, a sampling of recent literature shows that the majority…
