Phantom Behavioral Assimilation Effects
Consistent with social comparison theory (SCT), Blanton, Buunk, Gibbons, and Kuyper (1999) and Huguet, Dumas, Monteil, and Genestoux (2001) found that students tended to choose comparison targets who slightly outperformed them (i.e., upward comparison choices), and this had a beneficial effect on subsequent performance--a behavioral assimilation effect (BAE). We show (Studies 1 and 2) that this apparent BAE is due, in part, to uncontrolled measur…
Effects of Socioeconomic Status (SES) Information on Cognitive Ability Inferences
The similarity–attraction relationship revisited
In contemporary attitudes‐and‐attraction research, attraction has been viewed as a multidimensional construct. Moreover, the effects of dissimilar and similar attitudes have been shown to vary with the facets of attraction measured. The hypotheses tested are that (1) only the proportion of similar attitudes relevant to the social context or interaction goals affects behavioral attraction (i.e. interpersonal distance between the participant and ta…
The Self-Protective Properties of Ingroup Comparisons for Low Socioeconomic Status Students
A pilot study, the first step for work to be completed later, explored whether low socioeconomic status (SES) students restrict social comparison to their ingroup (the other low SES students) to self-protect. After receiving false performance feedback on a memory test, low and high SES students were asked to select another student and to predict his/her test score. In contrast to expectations, participants' dominant choice was to select high SES …
Performance feedback and self-focused attention in the classroom
Social Loafing and Self-Beliefs
An experiment tested whether the belief that one is better than others on performance aspects of the self moderates social loafing, the tendency for individuals to expend less effort when working collectively than when working individually. French students performed an easy task either coactively or collectively. They were then asked to rate how they individuate themselves from others on personal abilities within various domains of social life. T…
Upward or Downward Comparison After Failure. The Role of Diagnostic Information
What leads people to select an upward or a downward social comparison after a threat? This experiment examines a basic interpretation proposed in the literature according to which, in a threatening situation, the choice of direction for a social comparison, upward or downward, depends on the self-improvement or self-enhancement goals pursued by the subjects. The results provide empirical support for this interpretation and show that diagnostic in…
Study of some determinants of social comparison strategies using a new methodological tool
In addition to proposing a new method for testing the variability of social comparison strategies, this study looks at whether and how the social value of the comparison dimensions affect those strategies. After being attributed a superior, neutral, or inferior position on a dimension with a high or low social value, subjects were told they had to select 10 persons in order to choose a working partner among 30 comparison targets. Two pieces of in…
Where Does Self-Esteem Come From? The Influence of Private Versus Public Individuation
Josephs, Markus, and Tafarodi (1992) recently claimed that male self-esteem (SE) can be linked to an individuation process in which personal distinguishing achievements are emphasized. Most of the effects they found with a measure of private individuation, however, were only marginally significant. Not surprisingly regarding this statistical point, the present investigation failed to produce findings consistent with Josephs et males' hypothesis w…

Social regulation and individual cognitive function
Numerous experiments have illustrated the intervention of social regulations in individual cognitive functioning, applying such concepts as social co‐ordination, socio‐cognitive conflict and social marking. Two experiments, involving secondary school pupils are presented within this general framework. The first tests the hypothesis that individual cognitive functioning, highlighted in a task requiring mobilization of knowledge learned to that end…
